Topic: murky looking water Posted: November 05 2009 at 6:18pm |
hi does anyone know why my water is murky looking? my tank is about 2 months old and i have had quite a bit of trouble. i had it up for about a month and was doing fine. then all my fish died within about a week. all i have in it as of now, just a cleaner shrimp a few hermit crabs and about 40 snails. also have a candy coral that looks dead to me or dieing, i asked a friend and he said it might just be going through some sort of stage, a piece fell off about a week ago and now it does look somewhat healthier. i have a few other corals and mushrooms but not sure what they are. water parameters check out fine, temp is about 78 to 80 after light has been on all day.i have done 3 10 gallon water changes since the tank has been up. i put a hob filter on to see if it would help but hasnt done anything, it is only rated for a 20 gallon tank but i thought i would give it a try. i have a 15 gallon sump that i bought from a member on here that i use and have several filters in but my water still wont clear up. please someone help.

Are you running carbon? That is what I might do. I would fill the HOB filter with carbon and thats it.

How big is the tank? Are you running a skimmer? Filter sock? What's in the sump besides the carbon? Macroalgae? Bio Balls? How much flow do you have? What exactly did you test for?

I would change that sock every day, especially if you aren't going to run a skimmer.
That sock in the picture looks way overdue.
IMO if you had a good skimmer, you wouldn't have this problem. but thats just my opinion.
Untill then, change the sock every day and see if that helps.

I would also do a 10 gallon waterchange every week.

Do you have any critters that have been stirring it up? Or have you moved any rocks or corals off of the bottom?

no i havent moved any rock. the snails i have bury themselves but i dont know if that would do it. it looks like most of the cloudiness is coming from the bottom. its like the sand is emitting powder or something. i can look from the bottom of the tank to the top and i can see cloudiness just floating around.

Where did you get the sand? It looks really silty to me. That, combined with high water flow will cause cloudiness. You could add coarser substrate to the sand to give your existing fine sand something to cling onto. I agree a skimmer will help. Im sure evanston has good water, but i would still use RO.

i think the stuff i used was caribsea crushed coral. i was just searching brands of crushed coral and came across a forum that talks about crushed coral being bad substrate and that sand should just be used, is this true? is all the cloudiness coming from the powder from the crushed coral?

Where did your rock come from? Did you watch any kind of cycle before you added fish? It looks like a bloom of bacteria to me. This tank might just need more time or more healthy live rock.

i only put in about 10 pounds of live rock and i have about 50 pounds of rock total. i got most of it from the lfs here in evanston and the rest of it at bird world. i was kinda wondering if i have some kind of bacteria or something. ithe water didnt cycle at all the lfs told me i could put a few fish in right away.at first i had a clown that did great and the got a film on it and took a few days to die. my water cleared up a few weeks ago and i put 2 new clowns in and they did great and then my water started getting murky again and they died. all the clowns have had some kind of film on them and take a few days to die.
