Diy pvc overflow, i thought i would share i built the same type on my 55 gallon reef and it works perfect a little noisy though. I can also build these for your tank just pm me, i have already done this to 3 tanks.  his

That looks pretty cool. Are the two pipes in the middle vents? Is that where the noise comes from?

Yes they are vents the noise comes from the actual overflow i dont like to use the elbows on the overflow it seems to work better without them.

I built something similar (with a single drain, wrapped in an ABS overflow), and it works perfectly. Going on 4 months now, and it hasn't failed once.
I'm curious though, you have that bar toward the top of the drains connecting them above where the safety U sits. That doesn't depressure the main drains? I assume not, but it seems to me like it would... Is it for increased flow? That's always been my one complaint, the flow rate through mine isn't as good as I had hoped.

I'm still trying to figure out, but what is the main reason that people decide to go DIY overflow rather than just drilling their tank? is it due to fear of breaking the glass? (that would be my fear anyways)

In my case the tank was setup already when I added the sump, and it just seemed like it would be a lot of trouble to drill it. As I said, it has worked perfectly, and I get roughly 6 times turnover per hour, which is on the low end of what I wanted, but acceptable. There are tanks with all tempered glass (believe some 55's are this way), and in that situation you really aren't left with many other options to drilling.

I got a plastic cup from burger king, cut it in half, made a hole in the bottom do fit on the pvc overflow top and cut notches down it kind of like an overflow box.

I basically took this design http://www.evillabs.net/wiki/index.php/Super_Sucking_Siphon and modified it so the ABS doesn't float. It's basically an all in one overflow and siphon drain. There are a ton of different designs.
