Topic: Lighting a 60g cubish/column tank Posted: July 28 2011 at 4:52pm |

So I am using my LED fixture over this 60g tank. And it almost looks like enough light but not quite. It has 24 LED's that are 3 w cree. I was planning to add a halide to it as well but I don't know how well this will blend, so what I am wondering is if I just stuck with all LED how many more would I need?
The tank is 30" deep and 20X24"

Are you running any optics on the LEDs? How far is it off the water? You could go with 36 LEDs. But I wanted to.see if it was a spread issue more than actually having enough light

Yes they have 60 degree optics I do believe, I think that is what I ordered lol. I can move the light up or down it is about 6-8 " off the water right now.

What is making you think you don't have enough light? Are your corals having issues?

24 Led's with 60 degree optics that close to the surface is going to out perform a 250w MH. I have 24 over my redseamax without any optics on them and i'm confident that I can grow anything wherever I want. (and my tank is 26" high)
My suggestion would be to wait it out a few weeks and see what happens, if everything is open and happy, save your money. My guess is (especially if you aren't dimming the led's) that you are just fine.

To me it seems like you may be a little low on LED's, and if I remember correctly your LED's with 60deg optics should be spaced about 2" center to center, or raise them higher from the surface. You may be ok with what you have, but if I were doing it I would use 30-40 LED's on it, and dimm them to get it just right.
