My red starfish doesn't look to happy.  It's arms are turned up at the end and when I look at his underside all of his tenticles are retracted except for the ones on the end of its arms.  There is also something either covering his mouth or coming out of it.  This stuff appears to look like a bunch of brown hemroids.

It has had turned up tips for about a week, but the past two days he has not been moving from the spot he it at.

I did a water test last Saturday and here are the results:

NH3/NH4 = 0.1 mg/L

NO2 = 0.1 mg/L

NO3 = 5 mg/L

PH = 8.2

Ca = 540 ppm

Alk = High 130 mg/L

PO4 = High >1<2

Salinity = 1.024

I put 1/2 a cup of SeaChem PhosGuard to reduce the PO4, because I heard that high phosphates can harm inverts.

I am going to do a water change, but would like to know if there is anything else that I can do to help the starfish out.

Thanks

John

Frankly, I'd suggest that it be given to someone with an older tank. It's not only starving but having problems because of a combo of water quality issues.

try and feed him tiger shrimp

I will just give my warning that your system will flood, bulbs will burn out, and things will take continuous maintenance... get over it.

Patrick the Starfish (as my daughter named him) is doing much better.  I figured out what the brown stuff coming out of his mouth was.  His stomach!  Learned that is what they do to feed.  Yum.

I've lowered my phosphates and alk and he seems to be happier.  I also made a puraid gumbo of raw clams/shrimp, flakes, and garlic drops to feed the tank instead of just flakes.  My wife was not happy with me when I mixed that up in the kitchen.  Phew!

Mark,

Thanks for the advice.  I was about to look for another home for him until he started showing signs of improvement.

Sky,

Thanks for the shrimp suggestion.

Just in case anyone wanted to know, the star is an Indonesian Red Star.

Thanks,

John
