Topic: DIY Powerhead Holder Posted: April 08 2005 at 2:34pm |
|
I am getting extreemly fed up with my suction cups that hold up my powerheads. I have tried a couple of things out of acrylic to see how they would work for mounting a powerhead to but so far I have been dissipointed with them.
Has anyone out there found or made a powerhead holder that worked well and wasn't prone to failure. If so I would like to see it.
I have been thinking about trying my own with magnets. Make a holder with one magnet attached to the powerhead and the other on the outside of the tank. The only problem with this is I don't know how the powerhead will affect the magnet.
Once again any ideas would be appreciated.

i've had great luck with some "clear" suction cups you can get down at
walmart. they're way better than the black rubber ones that come
with most powerheads. there are 3 sizes and they are used for
hanging orniments on glass so you can find them in the craft
isle. just take the metal hanger off them, and trim the nubbin
end to fit your powerhead and wham, great suction cups. my old
black rubber onces needed pressing once a week, these ones have gone 2
months without a press so far!!

Thank you so much Kevin for bringing this up, I woke up this morning to a white dirty tank. One of my power heads fell off and landed on the substrate and made a huge mess. I forgot to press fit my suction cups last night after attaching all the frags I got from the meeting. Luckily I did not lose any thing and my water perimeter checked out OK.
Hey Dnellans, good thinking that makes a lot of sense cause the bigger suction cups would have more surface area and stick better.Walmart here I come.

Drill a small hole in the plastic frame of the tank.
Thread a small plastic wire tie through the hole then through the hanging hardward of your powerhead.
Use the suction cups to position as necessary.
Tighten the wire tie.
Cut the excess wire tie off to avoid salt creep.

Take a loop of fishing line around the powerhead then secure it with a hook on the outside bottom of the tank frame or stick a toothpick between the glass and frame and tie the fishing line or loop it around the toothpick.
At the very least, secure the power cord somewhere so that if the suction cups fail the powerhead will hang by the cord.
Hope this helps.

You guys are awesome, so the thread or fishing line just acts like a safety just in case you lose the vacuum in the suction cup. I know what I'll be doing when I get home to night.Men I learn something new every day. Thank God for WMA.

Actually, the line/wire is taut so it takes the weight off the suction cups so that they can hold the pump against the glass where it's supposed to be. When they do release, and they will, the pump stays put, pretty much.
