So my friend gave me a marineland hot magnum canister filter. And I want to know if I should use it on my tank. Will it provide good filtration and if so what kind of media do you recommend to use?

Also a few weeks back I bought new ati bulbs. And after 2 weeks of use they both burn out. Both bulbs were connected to the same ballast and were kind of doing a immature flickering like thing. So I'm guessing it's the ballast that doesn't work anymore. Is there a way to test it out for sure before I go and buy a new one?

Also I'm running 1 blue plus In my tank and I'm thinking of going to buy another bulb (connected to the ballast that works). Which bulb do you recommend I get? I was thinking either ati purple plus or coral plus.

Aloha,

Filtration?

Some people like those canister filters. Cleaning them every 2 weeks is essential for a reef tank. Personally I'm not a fan. I believe a reef aquarium can grow it's own biofiltration with little need for equipment.

Lighting?
Make sure there is a good connection by checking the pins for arcing/burning, then swap the tubes. Putting working tubes in place of non-working ones will quickly tell you whether it is the tubes or the ballast.
What size? I have some spares for loan/sale.

The beauty of lighting is in the eye of the beholder. I prefer a bluish tint and typically stay away from white tubes, preferring to use tubes that make colors "pop". Three parts actinic - blue and one part purple/pink is my preference.

Other questions?

I run 2 hob filters and a skimmer and my tank seems like that's enought to maintain it clean.
The light is and odyssea 48" quad
The ballast is for 2 54w bulbs, but I don't know how that would work out

Did you know that you could remove the two HOB filters and the tank could be just as clean and look less cluttered? Let me know if you'd like to know how.
