So my freind, well my dads freind and mine, he has been watching as i progress in my tank weather its just buying new fish or if hes going to help here and there, but now he really wants to do some salt water and will soon be joining this forum!:) But he was telling me his plans today, and he is planning on getting two bigger tanks, and he was telling me he wants to do a Fish only with NO live rock. Is that a bad idea? I spoke with him how you should have it, but he is planning on a refugium, and so if he has live rock in the fuge and just sand and fish in the display,  Could this work out? He does have experience, and used to have alot of huge tanks when he was younger him and his wife was telling me, so its not just like he has no clue and is just jumping in...

Yes, lots of people have salt water fish only tanks.  I presume you need a very good filtration system since you don't have the live rock to help.  Look at the TV show "Tanks"!  I don't think I've ever seen them use live rock in a tank.  You don't even need to use sand.

You can, but is he going to have anything in the tanks?? Its very beneficial to have something so there are plenty of hiding places...
This is more than a hobby; its a lifestyle.

Yea, i think he wanted a couple of coral inserts but if he doesnt i might need to explain how he is going to need something to provide hiding places
