Eventually I will want to put a protein skimmer in my 42g cadlights versa. Can you guys suggest a decent skimmer that is fairly inexpensive, or is that not possible?

Welcome to the best source of the best reefkeeping information. We can suggest not bothering with a skimmer for a "smallish" tank like that. Smile Ask us "why" and "how" and you will find out just how simple and how fun reefkeeping can be.

Aloha,
Mark  Hug

Welcome to the board. I like the BM Curve 5. Works good and is easy to clean. I would put an add in the classified section and see what you can find used that will fit your sump.
Mark does make a good point you may not need a skimmer. What is your bio load in the tank and how are you taking care of nutrient export now?

I'm sorry I disagree with Mark I would run a skimmer. I haven't had to buy one in awhile but yes the classifieds section and KSL classifieds are great resources to find used ones at a good price.

I just got it up and running, So as of right now all i have for filtration is some live rock and a filter sock. I plan on putting some more rock, mineral mud, GFO and chemi pure in there as well.

LS and LR do about 80% of the filtration of a properly set up reef aquarium. Most of the remaining 20% is the LW and the algae.  This is called biofiltration. It's Mother Natures way and it's very effective and efficient. You won't hear that from the LFS or anyone that is trying to sell you something.
Mineral mud, Chemi-pure, GFO; these are all useless or unnecessary and can even cause problems at this point in this tanks life.

Aloha,
Mark Hug

P.S.
Hope this helps. BTW, I've been at this hobby since you were 10 years old and I've been helping new hobbyists like yourself since I helped start this club almost 21 years ago.
