Correct me please. If I use a solenoid to shut my RO/DI water off at the sump, is waste water continuously created? Obviously I can test this theory at home, but I'm not home. At work, cruising the inter webs.

My system has an auto-shutoff that kicks in when the storage tank is full. Is there a storage tank in line with your setup?

Yes, waste water continues to flow. The better unit to use is the one that shuts off the source/supply water when RO water is not needed. This may be what vadryn has. Found it in the first hit. The $20 unit turns off when RO pressure reaches ~65% of incoming city pressure. http://www.waterfiltersonline.com/auto-shutoff-valves.asp

Thanks. I am not using a holding tank. My RO system is down stairs directly under the tank. I have a 20' tube running it up through the wall and prettied up with a faceplate. The tube is over my sump. I was going to try running the RO water on a timer, but don't want wild salinty swings.

Using that shut off that Mark suggested will still do the same thing with or without a storage tank. All that has to happen is the pressure builds up and then it shuts off the source water.

Salinity swings are no big deal. I often pour in an amount of RO water equal to 5% of my tanks volume and I've topped off even more than that with no bad effects. I can easily see how you could set up a storage tank that you refill when it gets low and set a powerhead inside the storage tank to top-off the reef each time the timer turns it on. But 20 feet is a long way for a little powerhead to pump. There are easier ways to do this. Have you heard about the "Glug Jug" for automatic top-off Works like a charm. Question about your current setup. If you forget to turn off the RO can it fill the sump and overflow
