I have a 10 gal aquarium.  I am running a 30 gal HOB filter.  I am also running a 5 gal sump/refugium.  In the sump there is no mechanical filtration and the only chemical filtration is a bag of carbon.  My q is can I remove the HOB filter and just run off the sump/refugium?  The only benefit that the HOB seems to have at all is the floss from the cartridge.  All advice and feedback is welcomed!  Could I even just put some LR rubble and more cheato in it instead of the cartridge?

You can use only your sump just add some filter floss so you can have mechanical and chemical filtration.

IMO you should keep it running. is it taking to much space?

No but I'm having a problem with red algae and I was thinking that the floss is probably holding all the gunk in it might be a contributor.

Yes HOB mechanial filter needs regular basis of removing the garbage it collects, otherwise like people say it becomes a nitrate factory. I take off the garbage it collects every time i do water changes. keeps my water sparkly clean

Often times cyano problems are due to poor flow through the aquarium. How much flow is in your tank?

I have the flow from the return pump the HOB filter and I have a Zoo Med rotating head pump in the right hand corner and Powerhead 301 in the left hand corner.  Both are rated at 180 gph.
