I'm curious...

So much is said about the beneficial bacteria, live rock etc...

I've also read about people using UV / Ozone at times

Do these mechanical methods wipe everything out?

Mostly kills what's in the water that goes through the UV Sterilizer or comes in contact with the O3.

It's sometimes a good way to control the Ich parasite, but ever since the development of the Garlic Oil method, the only thing I've used either of those two gadgets for is to clear a phytoplankton outbreak(greenwater) with a UV Sterilizer.

Both methods make the water clearer but I like a natural reef aquarium. A greater variety of organisms grow better without UV, or O3, or a skimmer. Also, the power of Sunlight and Algae is still under-recognized in the hobby. But that's just me rambling.Smile

to be honest I just turned off my ozone the other day worried about how clean my tank started to look... I know that sounds weird but it got to a point where it didn't look natural  I was worried all snails/crabs where going to starve... my sand sparkling white... algae wasn't growing on the glass  so I'm just experimenting now and letting it go for a week or two with out turning it on...
