After having enjoyed our 24g JBJ nano for just over a year, we are planning to set up our old freshwater 55g long to a mini reef.

I am looking at the 48" long 110w  VHO ballast kits at Hellolights for lighting.

Any opinions about the ARO ballasts?

Will 4 110 w bulbs be ok at 24" height above the sandbed?

   What type of bulb combination?

The ARO ballasts with 48" long VHO lighting from Hellolights is exactly what I bought to suppliment my MH and it has been working great for me for 18 month. I would do it again.

"Will 4 110 w bulbs be ok at 24" height above the sandbed?"

It depends what corals you want to keep. If you want to keep the same softies & LPS that are possible in the JBJ Nanocube then I think the VHO will be perfect. If you want to keep SPS (other than Montipora digitata or M. capricornus which will do well under this lighting) then you will need more VHO or MH or T5 lighting.

"What type of bulb combination?"

I would guess 2 or 3 10K daylight and 1 or 2 Actinic.

Possibly the best person to answer the question of bulb temperature & what you can grow is Scott who is the President of Idaho Marine Aquarium Society. He is a frequent lurker here you can leave him a PM. He goes by "GARFVolunteer" or find him at http://www.idahoreefs.org
