I have a Euroreef skimmer on my 65 gal tank.  I bought the whole setup used a few months ago.  Either I am not adjusting it properly, or its broken, but I hardly ever get it to skim anything out of the tank.  I have probably emptied the collection cup 3 times in 2 months.

I have tried decreasing the air flow through a little valve I put on the end of the airline tubing (it did not have one when I got it).  We have tried raising/lowering the riser pipe.  The last time we adjusted it, it looked good, then when I went to work it overflowed, blew the lid off the top of the collection cup and started spewing foamy water on the floor.

I am wondering if I have a bad skimmer or I just don't know what I am doing.  What is the procedure for dialing in a protein skimmer?  Whenever I think its working it all of the sudden quits.  I was thinking about just getting rid of it and buying an ESM but I supposedly have one of the best skimmers available, so what gives?

Don't know if it matters but it has a small crack in the reaction chamber right above where the riser pipe connects.  You can see some bubbles blowing through there.

You can seal that crack w/ weld on. As for the skimmer... IMO, raise the riser just a slight bit to where you find wetter foam and continue to rise until you reach your desired skimmate. I turn my skimmer off for a couple of hours after feeding and find that my production is peaked at what I feel to be awesome.

I'll call you.

In order of importance, here are the things we will discuss:

  1. Clear the venturi of calcium buildup with a small grabber wood screw.
  2. Place the end of the air hose above the skimmer.
  3. Check the needle wheel impeller for obstructions between the needles and check for a swollen magnet.
  4. Ensure the pump is pumping enough water to raise the level inside to the neck of the skimmer.
  5. Ensure a good fit at the bushing where the water enters the skimmer. (A small crack isn't a big problem but should be fixed.)
  6. Position the effluent tube at a level just about even with where the neck constricts.
