So lately Ive noticed some of my sps colors are fading, and my large green birdnest colony looks like its dying.  After getting a new test kit(salifert) I tested and my mag is very high, way above the reportable range on the kit. It seems my last test kit was bad so I kept dosing it.   Im wondering if there is any correlation between the two.  Is there any bad side effects from having a really high mag?  I did a 25-30% water change last night to try and help bring the levels down some.
My parameters are as follows:
Alk-8.5  (Hanna tester)
Calcium- 420  (salifert)
Nitrate-0  (salifert)
Phosphates-0  (Hanna tester)
Mag-? was about 2000, now its 1650
Salinity- 1.026
Temp-78

Thoughts?

I had my mag up to 2000 when I was dosing it to kill of Bryposis. I did notice colors start to fade and look washed out. This lasted the whole time I had it that high. When I brought it back down to 1500 the colors came back in a few short weeks. I'd just let it come down naturally and you should be fine as far as colors go. The birdsnest colony you may want to frag, in my experience when birdsnest start to go they really go. Also I noticed that you have the salifert kit now? You can totally get an accurate reading even if it's too high and uses the whole syringe . . . Just fill the syringe again and keep putting drops in. When it stops just add the full syringes level and the new syringes levels together to get your total mag.

thanks for the info, Thats what I did with the salifert kit, I just wasnt sure how accurate it was.  Going by that,  my mag was around 2000.  After a 30% change its down to about 1650 now.  I think my birdnest is toast, im bummed the colony was huge! I fragged a bunch of it, so we will see if it makes it. At least im bryopsis free Smile

My hubby accidentally poured a whole gallon of Mag into our old 40g tank (he thought it was RO/DI topoff water).  Granted, it was a quick change that could've affected the corals more than just the magnesium itself, but still.  I don't know what our Mag got up to, but the effect was pretty much what you described.  Washed out...birdsnest went first.

Water changes are probably the best way to slowly lower the magnesium.

Funny how coral do differently in each tank. My Birdsnest colony is one of the constants in one of my tanks, even as Montipora around it may fad and die.
