QuoteReplyTopic: yellowheaded jawfish spawning ? Posted: July 18 2007 at 4:58pm
I recently returned from a camping trip to find both of my yellowheaded jawfish in the same hole together and one of them comes out to eat while the other stays in the hole only nibbling at what goes by the hole. My question is if they are spawning what should I be looking for and what should I do if they do spawn ? I purchased the two from www.sealifeflorida.com from a guy named Martin Moe who tank breed and tank raised them.
Thank's Mike I PM'd him so we will see If he has part 2 done yet. They are actually quite commical now Kind of like 2 of the three stooge's when they both try darting back in the same hole at the same time or tugging on each others fins and tails trying to keep each other from getting out of the hole at feeding time.
Here's a pic of them with a piece of krill shortly after they scored this piece they both went in thier hole and had a feast together !! Shortly after they were both poking their heads out of the same hole together couldn't get that one on the camera.
That's great. Thanks for the picture! Are they normally this yellow or just since they started sharing a den? I hear the Jawfish from Florida are more yellow.
Yes Mike these yellow heads have great color and are even more stuning under the actinics I'M impressed with these fish from sealife. The one thing I have noticed about them is the one in the hole has more of a gold ring around it's eye while the one outside the hole has more blue to black when they are poking both of thier heads out of the hole it appears as if one has biger eye's not sure if this is the difference between male and female ?
I think it happened I have hundreds of tiny little fish looking things wiggling in the water that flock to the light ! Im trying to siphon them in to the sump with a light and siphon tube there appears to be A hundred are more of them . Any suggestions what they might eat ? or any suggestions on what I might do to increase thier survival rate?
From the article linked to above: "When raising jawfish fry, the first food has to be extremely small. Euplotes has proven to be a good type of fry food for tank-raised jawfish; some have had success using freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. "
