Topic: DIY LED Drivers Posted: January 31 2014 at 7:42am |
Well my real birthday was yesterday (not the one I put on my profile for the identity theft people) and my wife got me a hot air rework station. If you have been following the DIY LED driver threads in Reef Central you know that they have come up with a very inexpensive board to make these. The issue has been that they were surface mount components and very difficult to build with a standard soldering iron. The new hot air station will allow us to build these drivers easily.
Each driver will run 6 LEDs so you have a lot of ability to control various colors. The cost is very low, around 4-6 dollars depending on the order size. They have set them up to have 4 or 5 drivers on each board to save some space.
So, read the DIY Driver thread over there and let's order some custom boards and build us some drivers!
Let me know if your interested and we can do a mass board order from China.

I'll go check out the thread but just wondering a couple of quick things. Is the output voltage variable so that you can tune it for the number of LED's? Is the output current adjustable and what is the range? Are they dimmable and which method (0-10 Analog or PWM)?
I think you know I'm in. lol

Voltage is constant, current is variable, input is 5 volts PWM. They will drive the 10 Watts, but you'll only get fewer leds per driver. W=current*volts.

Short update. First, check the thread on reef central. It has all the information on what I want to build.
The drivers are 5 volt PWM, like an arduino input, they are dimmable, they require an external power supply to run the LEDs, the arduino just sends a signal at about 10 milliamps to the driver which turns on the correct amount of electricity from the external power supply.
Let me know if you have questions.
Thanks, Fat

link to the thread on reef central?
And I am probably VERY interested. I have several Arduinos, and I even have an aquarium controller shield for them.

Oh, and thanks to Eric of Aquarium Creations, he had two of the lights of the style of mine that were junk and he gave them both to me, so I got a couple of drivers for my existing one, and now an extra case to build a new led in. The second one had got so hot it warped/melted the drivers, the leds are basically all burned/charred/not usable, and the circut board they put them on is black. So basically, the case, the heat sink and the glass over the bottom is all usable!! Not a waste because it is a very good case/heat sink for a DIY light.
