Anybody have any recommendations on cleanup crew that can withstand an aggressive fish only tank? I converted my reef to a FOWLR a few months ago and am starting to have algea problems.
I'm wondering if there are any large crabs, starfish, urchins or whatever that might be able to defend themselves against my fish. I did add a foxface recently in hopes that his grazing would help, but it doesn't seem to be doing much. I also tried a chocolate chip sea star, but it got picked on so it's now residing in my sump. By the way, I have a chocolate chip sea star for sale if anyone's interested!

My fish are:
Clown trigger
Emperor Angel
Blue Spot Puffer
Volitan Lion
Coral Grouper
Blue Tang
One-Spot Foxface
Hoping to add a humu humu trigger and a harlequin tusk in the near future.

I would go for a black long spine sea urchin and another of the longer spined urchins, some hermit crabs, and some large zebra turbo snails.  You will probably loose some of the crabs and snails now and again though.  The urchins should be able to protect themselves pretty well  but can't get into the smaller, tighter areas.
150 gal reef with 50 gal sump. Reef Octopus DCS-200 Skimmer. AI Sol Blues.

One of the nicest benefits to a FOWLR tank is you can kill the lights for a few days to knock off any algae growing in the tank.

You can always lower the intensity of the lighting, or the photo period.

Are you growing macro in your sump? Get an aggressively growing macro algae and run the lights in the sump for a longer photo period than the main tank.

As far as the clean up crew, it'd be a toss up by any means. You MIGHT find some success with larger hermits and snails, but there is no guarantee with your motley crew. ( nice fish selection btw )

One last option is to be on the lookout for a tang that really does it's job cleaning up the reef. I've seen yellow eyes go to town on almost every kind of algae.

If only there were extra large blennies haha! I have a bicolor that is worth it's weight in gold.

I could add a starfish to my tank if you still have it. Where are you located?
