Topic: Srimp Hatching in tank Posted: October 03 2012 at 11:04am |
I have tried to look up a little info on the chances of a shrinp laying eggs and hatching in my tank and can't find much. I am noticing what look like little pink shrimp with what almost looks like white spots or eyes on the back. They are pretty small right now and the swim in and out of holes in my LR with the pods that are in my tank. A bit of info on my tank. Has been running about 3 1/2 to 4 mo now. I haven't had any fish in the tank for over 3 months now. I have one shrimp in there it's a cleaner shrimp. Is it possible the cleaner shrimp laid eggs and they're hatching? From what I read they are hermaphrodites, but still need 2 to make babies. I have some video, but they swim around to fast to get any pics of them. They look nothing like all the pods I have in my tank right now.

I have never attempted to raise shrimp but i do have 2 cleaners that lay eggs frequently. From my understanding most shrimp species are hermaphrodites but it reqs 2 shrimp for fertilization, which takes place when the "female" molts. From my reading of people who do attempt to raise them the young are usually released in the wee hours of the morning. The young are free swimming but not fully developed and unless moved (or born in) a tank specifically for them they will be eaten by corals/fish or killed by the powerheads.
My guess is that your probably seeing some sort of amphipod but without seeing it positive ID will be difficult.

It could be saltwater mysis shrimp, I had an active population of them in a tank years back after getting a piece of rock that had a colony inside.
I'm going off the fact you said they swim in and out of the rockwork, they're interesting swimmers and look almost like they're running over the rock surface.

Cool videos thanks for the links. I will have to try and get some video or pics of mine. The only thing is the ones I have are a pinkish color. IDK if the mysis are that color or more of the clear brown color in that video? Like I said I only have one cleaner shrimp in my tank so that's what threw me off. I will have to see if they get bigger or how long they make it. Since I have no fish in my tank this might be interesting to see.

This is a pic of a baby cleaner shrimp or so it says and that what the ones in my tank look like I think anyways. Jusy as stated above though they don't sit still in my tank and they are always moving around like in that video so I prob just have some kind of pinkish mysis shrimp.

Whatever it is, your cleaner shrimp and possibly corals are going to enjoy their meal !
