So I picked up a Clam yesterday at Aquatic Dreams.... and brought it home slowly aclimated and set it in the tank it opened with in seconds I went in the other room for a few and when I came back it was loaded with Nassarius snails.... pretty much looking like they where attacking it?

I moved the clam to a higher spot off the sand and they left him alone all night and morning, then again this afternoon I tried setting him down in the sand again and a nassarius came up right away and crawled inside the clam

(right now its moved back up into a soap dish that I dont want in my tank =)

....

anyway I'm just wanting advice.... are these nassarius going to eat my clam or are they just cleaning algae etc off  of it? has anyone else experienced this?

Dion and a few others helped pick out the claim yesterday right after the reef tour...  and I'm sure everyone who saw it would say it was 100% healthy

sounds like the clam is already dying or is going to die? Either that or your nassarius have become meat eaters

You had a ton of nassarius in that tank, I'd pull a bunch out and trade them, they are scavengers and love fresh "meat", leave 10 or so in there max IMO, get some astreas or turbos for algae.  The clam may have an injured foot that they were honing in on, or are starving because there are so many in there and desperate for food.

The clam looked great. I'm going with the overpopulation theory.

well my clams foot is not looking the best... it should be pure white right?

mine looks a bit shredded and has a few brown spots on it =/ I should have checked the foot before buying.. right now the clam is only about 3 inches off the sand on a rock and the snails haven't touched it at all today hopefully its foot will heal

Could you have a Whelk or two in with your Nassarius? They look very similar and Whelks feed on clams. Look for the little piece of shell on their tail that they use as a door when they hide in their shells. Nassarius don't have that piece.

I agree- the snails should go. In any case, those snails are just opportunistic and probably hungry.
