i am moving up from a plain 29g to a 75g drilled aquarium.  i am wondering where to get a good affordable valve for controlling the flow to the sump and one for the return line from the pump.  i will also need a bulkhead.  can i find these at home depot or do i need to get them from an aquatic vendor?   i plan on getting a submersible rio hf 12 which has a flow of 630 gph at 4 feet.  would this pump be good and not heat the water too much?

You will need to get the bulkhead from a fish store as far as I know. The valve and most other plumbing parts are availible at home stores. Plumbing parts add up quick.

I would get a pvc gate valve if you can for the drain line.  If you're going to take this route, you'll want the fine tuning capability. 
 
However, the plain jane "Durso" style overflow works much better for such a small amount of flow, and you wouldn't have a valve to worry about clogging.
 
I think the Rio is fine, but don't rely on it exclusively for flow in the main tank.

the overflow box in the pre-drilled aquarium has intakes at the top, mid-section, and the bottom area.  so should i get a standpipe with the it's intake as high as possible and fill the sump low enough to accept the amount of water that will drop until the water level of the aquarium reaches the same height as the standpipe intake?
