Has anyone built a 3d background? I was thinking of putting one in my bowfront.

Yep, many times. What are you thinking of? I love the polyurethane foam backgrounds.

Adam,

I was looking a few examples on youtube of people using foam board and cement. What have you done and do you ever build any to sell?

To sell? Heck no. I'll do it for free!!!

It's a blast. How big of a tank are we looking at? I have a presentation on aquascape. We should sit at my computer for 15 minutes and get an idea of what you want.

Make sure you post pics once you get one. I'm pretty new to fish and haven't seen a 3d background before. Unless my barnacle glued to the back of my tank countsLOL

Free?! See that is why I like this group. People are always willing to go out of their way to help.

I was thinking something like this..... just as thick... but I really don't know what my options are.

I have a 46 gal bowfront. about 36" long and 20" tall.

I thought about going to Marcorocks.com and getting thier "Prime cuts" rock. They cut it flat on one side so you can glue it to your glass then you also get live rock, once seeded.

Im getting ready to start my 225 gallon paladurium (half land/half water) to house my dart frogs and also get some fresh water stingrays. Iv build backgrowns for dart frogs many times and know what im doing there but was considdering doing a 3d backgrown for my water and that new to me. So Adam I have some questions for you. the fome and concret methed, dose it hold up over time? What I need to do is make kinda a floting land as I need the hole bottom of the tank to be water for the stingrays and I dont want to build someting that is just gonna fall apart over time. Please let me know some info if you could.

Thanks Kris

Holds up forever.  But I'm not a huge fan of the concrete.  Floating land is cool, like actual floating, right?  If so Styrofoam covered in resin or covered in expansion foam is great.  If not really floating, then cover it in about anything.  But no worries, many great things to try.

I'd go with expansion foam, then cover in colored silicone.

Adam - I think I'm going to add a 3D background to my 45 gal stretch hex for Heidi's classroom.  What "leftovers" do you have?

So the salt water doesn't cause the foam to leach out chemicals into the water.  Gosh I've never heard of 3D for tanks, but it looks really cool!  I wonder if you can build in a few ledges to attach coral to!
