I agree a sump is better for keeping a clear water surface, but sometimes, for a variety of reasons it's just not possible or practical. The technique takes only a minute.

A new client told me the other day that the way I had changed their water flow was awesome. It caused the scum that used to form on the top of the water to completely disappear. What was surprising to me about the comment was that this was a standard drilled tank with overflow that had been maintained by one of the known aquarium maintenance companies here in the valley. The first time I worked on the tank I recognized a need and made a quick change, but I had no idea they had for years been dealing with a surface scum.
