I have a green fuzzy mushroom that is getting really big.  I was hopeing when I bought it that it would split and grow multiple shrooms.  I read an article on garf about propogating leathers and wondered if the same philosophy would work with GFM.  I was thinking of just cutting the mushroom in half.  leaving it attached to the same rock and letting it heal.  would it work so that the mushroom would just turn into 2??

I think it would work.  I have cut the tops off of my GFM and they grow right back so I don't see any reason why splitting it in half wouldn't work.  I have done what you are talking about before  some times it makes two new shrooms and sometimes the two halves just grow back together.  Amazing.

Oh,  you can also cut of the top and then cut that into 2 or 4 or 6 or 8 peices like a pizza and all of them will grow into a new shroom plus the tissue that is left on the rock will grow a new head.

I think (from reading other posts) that a lot of people do the pizza slice method of propagation.  So you get 8 little pieces that will grow.  They usually cut them and put them in a low water motion area of the tank, or put them in a small shallow plastic tub or dish with rubble in it in the tank.  Several different ways to do this - all of them pretty interesting!

Thanks Dave but Fuzzy King no. Addicted GFM propagator yes. Click where Dave (Sarnack) said and you'll find lot's of good info.

The green fuzzys base is different than the discasoma. So it is both difficult and unneccesary to cut at the base since cutting from the parimeter, the cuttings will grow new mouths.

Sometimes the new cuttings will deterierate. To minimize cutting deterieration I have noticed the fewer new cuttings I make at a time and the fewer cuts per new cutting the better the survival rate is for the new cuttings.

In time the cuttings will attach to sand or whatever they rest on. When this happens simply glue the sand or whatever it has become attached with to a rock. This is a temporary hold until the mushroom grows onto the rock.

It's a multi phase process not just cut, glue, done. The time from when you cut until you have an attached mushroom to a rock can be a month or two.

You can place a new cutting on a rock and secure it with bridal veil material, by doing this no glueing is neccesary. They will usually attach to the rock within acouple of weeks. I used to use this method then switched to the glueing method because my cuttings were deterierating under ther the bridal veil. I think they deterierated because I made to many cuttings and or cut each cutting too may times and they killed each other. I think it was Jake Pehrson who had a good explanation on what the technical reason was for this kind of deterieration.

I've had success using the glueing and the bridal veil method.

I had one green fuzzy mushroom at my office at work.  It was huge and gorgeous.  After about 3 months it was being invaded by my every expanding patch of star polys and was no longer expanding to its formerly huge size.  Since I couldn't easily move the star polyps away from it I scraped the mushroom off of the rock as close to the bottom as I could.  I didn't leave much, but sure enough what was left grew back and is now starting to push the star polyps down as it expands.  In a couple weeks maybe I'll scrape that one off and grow another.  Pretty cool how they work like that. 

I've tried the pie cutting method on several mushrooms and had good luck, but have never had the guts to do it on my fuzzies that I only have a few of.

When the base of the fuzzy overgrows onto another rock you can cut the mushroom between the rocks and each will recover. Sometimes I just pull one or both of the rocks until the fuzzy mushroom tears. It doesn't seem to matter how you do it. They will look pretty nasty at first but in my experiences recover fine.

Thanks for the advice guys.  Steve, Mark tells me that you are the GFM expert.  I think I'll try cutting it in two.  I'll post my results here.

Sorry about the bit and piece method of fuzzy mushroom info I am giving, it's just pretty much how my brain works.

You can make a score or cut using a razor blade or scissors across a fuzzy mushroom (preferably a well attached one) and it will sometimes split in two.

All this talk tempts me to try an x style score and see if I get 4 for 1. The thing is, these green fuzzys get so big, that 4 so close might be to weird.
