 Topic: 30G Breeder tank

Looking for a 30 g breeder tank that is 30" X 18" X 12 or 13" tall. I currently have a Marineland in that footprint but I would like to have one without the center brace. On mine the center brace is melting because of the MH bulb. Any other manufactures or custom tank builders down in Utah?

I wonder if the center brace is needed? The reason I ask is because almost 2 years ago I took a chance and removed the top frame from a 40 gal breeder for my coral farm. I always knew that the plastic frame was mostly to prevent bumps and chips that would otherwise cause a crack to start at the edge of the glass pane. The risk was worth it. I half expected to see a noticeable bowing of the 36" sides, but that has not happened.
It worked out so well that I did it again about 6 months later to another 40 gal breeder. Of course the top edges of these glass tanks are not display quality but a little rub with Emery Cloth gave the edges an acceptable smoothness. Though I initially did this to have the appearance of a rimless tank, it has worked out to be a practical solution. The plastic frames would have eventually become faded and brittle in the sunlight. The lack of a top frame makes them look, to me anyway, more like tide pools bathed in sunlight.

It's not a pretty hobbyist display but to me it's like a series of beautiful tide pools filled with coral, one draining into the next, leading to the ocean. Pictures don't do it justice.

I would agree with mark the plastic on the top does not do a whole lot as far as stability goes. but if you are still interested in a custom tank I could help you out. I have built man tanks for members on the board. let me know if you are interested.

my only comment would be, dont remove the plastic rim off a petco 40 breeder. Allglass/aqueon i would think is ok.

Of course glass thickness is a concern. I don't know what brand Petco is selling now, but that first 40, the one on the right, was a Petco purchase. I got the other 40 from a local hobbyist. The glass on both measures 7/32" thick, which is just a little shy of 1/4".
A 40 breeder is 16" tall and I them both filled to 13" only.
The 30 breeder I'll be setting up soon is shorter than a 40, only 12" tall and has 5/32" thick glass. I haven't yet decided whether removing the frame/brace will be an advantage in the spot where it's going to go, but since I would only fill it to 10" I don't expect a problem if the frame is removed.

I'd check at Petco again -- their $1 gallon sale expires tomorrow, I think. I just got one of their 40 G breeders for my sump and it does not have a center brace. If they sell the size tank you want it may not have a center brace.

the petco 40b without a center bows about 1/4" when full. roughly 1/8" in the front and in the back. its very noticeable with a glass lid on the tank.

Since mine is used as a sump, it is will never be even nearly full. Have to leave room for the times when the return pump is off. Thanks for the warning though.

That 1/4" is actually normal and acceptable. Without the top plastic frame it is the same. That's why I believe the frame is unnecessary.
