My friend recently set up a new RSM 250, it's been running great, and the other 2 reefers here in in town and I have been watching over the newby.

However, he has a complaint that he has to adjust the overflow gate daily to keep the skimmer functioning properly.   Too low, and no skimming, too high and it overflows like mad.  He does top off with R.O. water every day/other day.

He's a little worried about this since he goes out of town for up to two weeks at a time.  And while I can watch the tank for him, he'd prefer to be able to go a few days (3-4) without having to tweak the overflow gate.

Is the only solution an ATO?  or any other ideas that RSM owners have used/implemented?

ATO and new skimmer. That was my solution.

I got a Tunze Osmolator for top off when I first setup the tank and have never regretted it. The skimmer never really worked well for me for the 2 years or so that I was running it so I finally replaced it back in December with a Deltec MC500. That is probably the best thing I've done to my tank this far.
