A few days ago my clam looked like it might have been bitten by something but was not really damaged just upset. Then today it would not come out of its shell at all and its foot was not down. So I desided to check all the water conditions to see what was wrong. These are my test results.
Calcium = 440
Alkalinity = 2.6 mEq/L
PH = 8.1 tested late at night after lights had been out for a hour.
Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite = 0,0,0
Phosphates = 0
Salinity = 1.0235 SG at 83 deg = 1.0264 SG?
Temp = 83*F a bit high but I would be keeping it at 81*F if my lights didn't get so hot.
I use RO water to top off and I just did two 10 gallon water changes last week.
My clam was VERY happy and growing very fast up until a few days ago. I did just add a bi colored blenny the day before my clam became sad that likes to hang out by the clam (right by it). I also added a brittle star the week before but it has never been by the clam that I have seen. Could the blenny be the cause of my problems? I did just get my calcium in check it was at 580 with a alk of 2.2 mEq/L. Could the normal levels be causing problems for the clam?
One last thing I have noticed before is a bunch of little snails all over the tank. These snails do not look like piramid snails but are very small like them. These snails are on the clam in slighly higher consitration then they are on the glass and rocks in the tank. But they don't seem to be hurting the clam and they have been in the tank for about 5 months now. Could these be a problem? They seem to eat algae.
I don't want this clam to die because it was a very and its a very beautiful maxima clam.

Chris, Sounds like you might have pyramid snails. Go to the Search button and type in pyramid snails . There was a post on them in Oct. by dmanshep, he had them also. Or you can pm dan and ask him how he solved the problem.

pyramid snails are no fun ... if you can pick up the clam look underneath
it near the soft tissue, and in the cracks where new growth is.. if you see
small tiny snails in this area which are white likely they are the ones. I
was able to save my giant derassa by pulling him out of the tank and
rinsing/scrubbing off the snails in the sink under fresh water.. I did loose
a squamosa and a crocea to these snails however.. the crocea was so
hooked on the rock there wasn't any hope and the squamosa was too late
by the time I found out about these.. I have read that 6 lines have
sometimes helped.. I have a six line now :) another thing I do is remove
them at first sight in the tank, the snails that is.. I haven't completly
ridded myself of them however drastically reduced the population..

Do they eat algea off the glass when they are not eating the clam? I know that there is tons of tiny snails that are not the bad pyramid snails. I have seen pictures of the pyramid snails on snails and clams but they are in tight little groups on the host and not spread out like my tiny snails are. My tiny snails are also brown and gray in color and pyramid snails are white. My snails are also not as long as pyramid snails. If someone with a nice camera would like to come take a good picture I would be happy to have you come over.
Tonight I will check out my clam when I get home. I have also considered a 6 line but then they eat a lot of good things too.

If you've had these small snails for a long time and you also notice them in the sand bed and on the glass then I have my doubts that they are parasitic pyramids. It's my understanding that these snails are obligate parasites, but I could be wrong. My money's on the blenny. Do you ever see him nip at the clam?

Oh, do as dmanshep suggests. Pull the clam out and look at the underside. If you see small snails at the joint, gathered together and grooving with a pict, then you've got pyramids.

Could someone get me some info on common aquarium flatworms? I removed the clam and on the underside was a few small little round flat bug like things. They are very small about 1/32" or smaller in size. I tried to take a picture but it didnt turn out at all.
