Topic: Half of my PC Lightbulbs are dead Posted: November 06 2012 at 8:26am |
Woke up this morning, turned on the lights over my 55 gallon display and the right side lightbulb was dead, checked it and its all black by the socket so I think it burned out.
I really really need to get more lighting on the tank as right now half of it is completely dark. Does anyone have any PC lights that will fit over a 55 gallon? Or heck some LED's I could use till I can afford my own? Call me please 801-946-01zero8

not sure the hood from my 90 will fit, but you could use that for the next couple of weeks until I am ready to sell my tank.

Its the right side bulb that is burned out, the left side one still seems ok, I would assume that if I swap one I should swap out the other just to keep the lighting levels balanced?

your here in Riverton, the kid that runs Pet Planet on Redwood has good prices on bulbs. If it is just a bulb I would get one from him. If you need a quick fix and the bulbs are 4 footers, come take my old bulbs. Not great bulbs, pretty much towards end of life, but you are welcome to them to get you by for a couple of days.

man I had just thrown away some used ones a couple weeks ago.. make sure you pull the bulb out to see if it is a straight pin or a square pin before you go buy a new one.

Any reccomendations on the bulbs to get? Better to get 48 inch one or two 24's? Actinics? Should I just go straight to buying LED's? I have noticed our power bill increase and also notice how quickly our current light setup evaporates water.

I changed to LEDs and love it. Don't miss all the heat and power the old ones sucked up, the colors are better, and they don't degrade in brightness like all halide and fluorescent bulbs do over time. But 40 bucks or so for new bulbs for your current light, or 4 or 5 HUNDRED for lights depending on what led setup you go for, maybe MUCH more.

Do your research. You will find a lot of LED users end up supplementing with T5s. And some LED users claim they destroy some corals (ie chalices). Not saying they don't work, but they may not be the latest and greatest "gift" to reefers, particularly if you have to supplement with another kind of light!

I've really enjoyed LED's myself but as stated above you may want to supplement with something else. If you are going to replace that pc bulb I would try and replace it with one similar in color and length. I'm assuming your fixture houses 2 bulbs one on each side? I havent ever found a specific brand that I liked over another, they all seem the same to me.
PS your tank is ok with out light for a few days.
