Topic: Canister reactor Posted: November 26 2011 at 11:56pm |
Lately I've been seeing a little bit of cyanobacteria in my tank, so I did some H2O tests and sure enough, my nitrate and phosphate levels are a little high - not scary high, just a bit higher than I'd like. So I decided to try something I'd heard before - make a phosphate reactor from an RO pre-filter canister, since I had an extra lying around. It's a very simple concept, and technically, you can make almost any kind of reactor this way. Depending on the media you may need to tweak things, like put the reactor on your RO top-off line for a CA reactor. Since the phosphate media requires no special conditions (like low pH for CA) you can just pump straight aquarium water through it.
The idea is to run water through the canister in reverse to the way you normally would when hooked up to an RO system. To accomplish this, first you install a piece of PVC pipe in the center of the canister where normally the carbon block or sediment filter would go. Drill some holes in side of the pipe toward the bottom for the water to flow through. The media is then put in the canister around the pipe. Since the water will flow in reverse through the canister, it will enter at the top of the pipe and flow out through the holes in the bottom of the pipe, then upward through the media (flowing upward agitates the media slightly so it doesn't clump - this is especially important if you're using really fine media like FeO which will turn into a brick if it's not adequately agitated). Flow rate is controlled by a ball valve on the inlet line to the canister.
Here's a diagram:
and a photo of the unit in my sump.
I'm currently running SeaChem PhosGuard beads. So far it's running fine after a couple of days. Time will tell if it is actually effective.

This is the same thing Bulk Reef Supply does, and they work great, I have one running bio pellets

What kind of pump are you using on yours? I'm considering getting a better pump since the one I have is a really weak one I had laying around.

I have a couple exactly like that with a maxi jet 400 for kalkwasser, phosphate remover, carbon, etc.

It's good to see other people have used these reactors successfully.

Adam,
I am curious how you do the kalk in there. I am in the process of cobbling together a Kalk/Nillsen reactor with a large acrylic tube and plumbing it into my RO unit through my ATO but I have a spare acrylic RO canister that I wondered about doing this same thing for kalk. Sounds much easier!
But how often do you have to add powder and how do you monitor the output effluent ph?

Mike, let me know if you build your own. I can cut you some flanges on the cnc router

Almost... BRS items are set up to run with IN and OUT being utilized in the standard way. This way is opposite... I think it may be better than BRS, with the exception of not having the 'refillable' cartridge. hmmm... I may take my cartridges out and run them 'wrong'

Mik3B-
I run kalk in mine by hooking it up directly to my top off line. I've done this for several years but I think I may switch over to an actual kalk reactor. I don't measure the effluent, and currenlty I just dump in a half a cup of kalk every couple months. I wish I was adding more which is why I've been working on getting the actual kalk reactor on there.

Nice Tyler - sounds like you must have that baby up and running!
Maybe I should start my Christmas shopping and see how much $$ i'll have left to purchase some acrylic pipe and figure out how to cut my top and bottom. I might hit you up for some cuts since I didn't end up taking that job where they have a full CNC. My machine doen't cut anything thicker than .125" and I'll want at least .25" maybe .375".
Thanks for the info Adam, I may just try it and measure my effluent, still trying to get my CA reactor dialed in, and it looks like I'll need to supplement my pH at night, so I could run my RO line through my spare canister with kalk in it on a solenoid that's plugged into a time or my Tsunami ATO and have it only run at night.
Sounds like people run them through the in and the out, wonder which way is more effective for kalk on a dialed down RO line.

I don't know which direction may be best for each different media type, but I'm guessing backwards is best for most. I run mine backwards so that the water flows up through the media, slightly stirring it along the way, whereas I don't think you'd get that stirring if it were flowing the other way.

I agree. Sounds like everyone on RC that runs this type of setup without a pump or magnetic stirrer runs it reverse eith a downpipe drilled at the bottom, using the water (or pump) pressure to mix the media. They do say to shake the canister periodically if using it with kalk so channelling happens less.
Makes sense. Thanks!

Thanks for the Tip, I had one and used clear hose in the middle and always had trouble with it, I'll use PVC, so smart. do you use a gasket or anything at the top of the pvc pipe in the middle?
Biopellets in one of these ??!??!! Scratches head - aren't biopellets supposed to have tonz of flow? Can you really get enough through one of these?

I doubt bio pellets would work in this since those pellets are designed for maximum aeration (i.e. used at the water surface), and it is a bit difficult to get a whole lot of flow through the unit anyway. Basically, I doubt you'll get enough oxygen exposure in the canister for the aerobic bacteria to cultivate effectively, and maybe too much for anaerobic. Although, you could conceivably make a bio de-nitrator by using very fine media/substrate and running a slow drip flow, not in reverse. The idea there would be to reduce flow and substrate disturbance and minimize oxygen exposure to allow for anaerobic growth.
PVC works really well in mine, and yes I put a rubber o-ring at the top and bottom of the PVC. Depending on the canister, you should be able to find the right size at Home Depot or the like.
