Topic: Refugium Lights Posted: May 14 2003 at 12:22pm |
I just went to Home Depot during my lunch to grab some power compact lights for the refugium and couldn't find any. I swear I have seen them before and the specifically say pc lights on them. Am I not getting something? I just want something to plug into a timer. Thanks!

Are you talking about the Lights Of America lights? If so I went to the Pleasant Grove Home Depot just yesterday and got some. They are in the outside lighting section. There seem to be 2 types. The first is a 29 watt 4pin socket light (I think). The other is a 64 Watt Screw in PC bulb. They are both 30 bucks so I got the 64 watt. Also they don't come with a plug, so you will have to buy a plug/extension cord for about 4/5 bucks. They are right next to the light and its easy to wire it togeather.
If thats not it, then I haven't seen it either.

I too have seen the Lights of America lights at Home Depot, but not any standard PC bulbs like at LFS. Power Compact is a pretty "aquarium specific" term. Even at places like Commercial Lighting if you ask for power compact bulbs, they won't know what you are talking about. They have different names for them and they don't use the same light spectrum numbers as we do. FYI, I have tried to use Home Depot ballasts in the past for 96 watt power compacts and have not had good luck. I have returned so many that the store manager said he wouldn't return anymore for me. That is just my experience though. Happy Hunting!

This forum is intended for hobbyists and I don't think it would be appropriate for me to discuss products and prices on here. Please call me at the shop for more details.
Thanks!!

Just for info. I just built a DIY light setup. I am using 2 24" bulbs in series and a f32t8 ballast. I'm over driving the bulbs to 80watts. Been running for 2 days and is working really well. Now, Marcus, I need a 96watt PC to add to my system. I already have 1 55watt pc, 2x13watts pc's, 1x20 no and the NO's over driven. What do you have as far as 96'ers go?

Of my personal stash, I have two used 96 watt PC bulbs. They are Custom Sealife 6700k ultra-daylight bulbs. Call me.

I have used the Home Depot Lights of America 65 watt lights on my refugium. I have a hard time keeping caulerpa alive under these. I transfer caulerpa that is growing well under the normal actinic/MH combo in my tank, at 10 hours per day. When I put it into the 24x7 light of the refugium, the caulerpa seems to struggle. Other algae is growing okay.
The LOA lights seemed really "blue" in Home Depot compared to the other lights, but they look really yellow compared to my 10K bulbs. there is no published info on their spectrum that I know of.
