I thought I would post here first, then go talk to Eric at M.A. I recently bought a 180 gallon acrylic tank; and as would be expected, there are several minor to moderate scratches. Being the anal OCD type, I would like to sand/buff as many of these scratches out as possible before anything goes in the tank. I have read a lot of people use sand paper to wet sand the deepest scratches (800 progressing to 2000 grit) then they use a polisher/wet abrasive to buff out the haze caused by the sand paper. My Questions:
- Is this the recommended procedure by you experts?
- Is there any thing I need to be careful of using this method (besides over sanding)?
- Is there an easier way of restoring an acrylic tank?
- What products do you guys use as the liquid abrasive? I have read a lot use Novus.
- Are there liquid abrasives that are particularly dangerous or particularly safe for a future reef tank? or is rinsing out the tank sufficient?
- What methods have you guys used to keep your acrylic tanks clean AND scratch free.
Thanks for your help...I know Acrylic tanks get a bad rap for their propensity to scratch, but I like all of the other benefits associated with acrylic, i.e. clarity, weight, design, ease of drilling, strength/shatter resistance, insulation properties...so with your help I think I can make this tank look as good as new and keep it that way.
Thanks in advance
