Topic: Yellow Anemones Posted: March 19 2004 at 9:04am |
Hi all,
I have a rock with yellow anemones, yellow polyps, whatever you want to call them. Anyway, I have seen them slowly decrease in numbers. I'm not sure why, and they do get indirectly fed. I'm thinking that my peppermint shrimp (2 big guys) are eating them. Has anyone else seen this or have other ideas why they are disappearing?

I had a bright white anemone with purple tips that I really liked. My peppermint harassed it until it turned inside out and died. You may want to try keeping the peppermints out with a strawberry container to see if that helps slow down it's demise. If it doesn't help then at least you know it wasn't the peppermints.

I would guess it is the peppermints.
Although they are mostly reef safe the do pick at some corals.

Could just be color blind peppermint shrimp .
I had a small rock with a few yellow anemones in my previous tank which also contained a couple peppermints. The anemones never seemed to grow and spread, but they weren't really declining either. Now that same rock in my current tank (without peppermints) is thriving. Probably twice as many anemones now as two months ago. I don't know if it's the shrimp or just the new location that's done it? I've never witnesses a shrimp eating a yellow anemone (but I've never actually witnessed one eat an aptasia either, but all my aptasia dissapeared when I added the shrimp).
Why don't you taste both (aptasia and yellow polyps) and let us know if they taste similar ?

Maybe I will. Would you consider polyps and aptaisia to be seafood?

No, I certainly wouldn't consider them seafood. So you're safe to try them .
(believe it or not, but I've identified a few substances here at the refinery by taste )

I had a rock covered in yellow polyps that grew and thrived until I added a couple of peppermints, I never saw them eat any either so by the time I made the connection they were all gone ! they were the only new thing I'd added so I assume it was them, hindsight's 20/20 eh?

I have just 1 peppermint and have noticed that just as soon as the yellow polyps seem to start a "growth spurt", Peppy spends a little more time than normal in the polyps area... never actually takes all the polyps out, though... at least, not yet.
