Rotifers are so easy to grow, but I'm not sure if you would want to.
I was told by a previous president that rotifers are "like a sack" for
carrying the green. So, if you add green, do you need rotifers? I do,
just because I think of them like the protein part of my tanks dinner.
Corals cannot live on green alone....Just a guess on my part, but I
think our corals need different foods and different sizes of foods, so
these are different! If you've previously read the phytoplanton
thread, you've seen the link to a rotifer growing set-up. I have
nothing to add to his ideas, except: Mess with the green first.
Somehow, rotifers can splash/hop/jump? into your green and eat it
all! It's usually OK, just another bottle to add to the reef!
If you decide to grow rotifers, you need a 53 micron filter to strain
them. I also strain them into a algae sponge scrubber thing from the
LFS to get out the rotifer poop! I learned that from Cindy Jones.
Thanks, Cindy! You can get fertilizer, the filter from Florida Aqua
Farms. And , I can start your culture!

And, lets talk baby brine shrimp while we're on the protein subject!
These guys are so easy to hatch! They are a different size, different
protein source and very nutritious, so I've read. But, they are only
nutritious for a short time, Just a few hours after they hatch, they are
basically worthless! So, you gotta feed 'em! And, you've already got
the green! BBS eat one celled algae like crazy! And, that makes 'em
way nutritious! I hatch our BBS in green, 'cause I figure they all hatch
at different times and sometimes I forget about them for
days...There is also a fatty-acid (that's the stuff cell membrane are
made of, in mammals anyway) product, called Zoecon (Kent) or
Selcon (by somebody else). I stick a drop of Zoecon in the BBS, 'cause
they eat it, too!
You can also grow the BBS to adult in about 12 days! Live food for a
picky eater OR sea-monkeys!
So, it turns out that the hatched egg shells float to the top, and the
unhatched eggs sink to the bottom. It's easy to stick a rigid plastic
tube to middle and suck 'em out and then it's loaded to target feed
your reef.
Jake told me that unhatched eggs can cause intestinal troubles in
our fish. There is a way to de-capsulate them. It's in put book
"Clownfishes" by Joyce Wilkerson. Anybody have that book checked
out?
I think it would be easy to make a hatcher out of an upside down
Pepsi bottle. I bought ours from FAFUSA, but I never use spout at the
bottom....
Any ideas I forgot? Am I sorta on track?

Though I'm a previous president, I assume that it was Tim Weidauer and/or Joe Jones that explained this to Suzy, since, besides being previous presidents, they were also the previous owners of Mountain Corals/Velvet Green Phytoplankton and Rotifers.
My understanding of the reasoning behind their explanation is that the many organisms that don't capture and eat the single-cell algae directly, do eat the rotifer that hopefully has a gut full of algae. As Suzy suggested, in this way the meat eating coral consumes and digests the salad that came wrapped in meat. 
IMO, it's very important for us to learn what each coral, invert and fish eats before we acquire it!
 Anyone have a good recipe for veggies wrapped with meat?

I think the rotifers add a touch of omega 3 fatty acids...What cells
use for their membrane, right?

I used to live in Portland, and you're right, it's a georgeous place to live. The only problem that I had with that area is just what you see in the pictures, It's always overcast in the winter! I had to wait months just to see the sun!

As a former resident of Oregon, I miss the spring for the explosion of color. I also miss the long growing season for my garden. Remember, it only rains once a year in Western Oregon-September through April!
As a SCUBA diver, I also miss my BIG aquarium called the Oregon Coast. Oh, well......
