Topic: Genetically altered fish for sale? Posted: December 04 2003 at 2:20pm |
I heard about this awhile ago, but not until now did see anything concrete.
Check this out? Freshwater fish may be the wave of the future:

I've been following these stories pretty close. Sound cool, yet scary at the same time.

I haven't gotten into genetic alterations, but I've had success with mechanical alterations.
The hardest part about turning my little clownfish into Nemo was catching him. I'm disappointed though that his new lucky fin doesn't move twice as fast as the other one. He just kinda holds it against his side and swims in circles.
Anyone know how to make him glow like after Nemo was cleaned by the cleaner shrimp? That's my next task!

Hey - I do not think it is that far fetched. In highschool I experimented with several dozen guppies - trying to get specific colors and tails.
Isn't that a form of homebrew engineering?

All these genetic mutations and they will take over the world!

Ethically, is genetic alteration that much different from plastic surgery? Last time I checked, California wasn't banning breast augmentations ... ????

Wow, that's taking dyed fish to a whole new level! When it comes to my fish tank, I think I'll stick with mother nature.
(but I'll be looking at the LFS now for orange danios)

I think that there is a huge difference between mechanically changing something and genetically altering it.
Back to Biology 101, if the parent has a trait that trait can be passed on to the child (genetically of course.)
If my woman gets a boob job, it doesn't pass on large breasts to her children. (However the child is more likely to get one :))
I think that there is a place for genetically engineered stuff in society. But where do you draw the line?

Shane, you bring up a good point. I wonder how my Paracanthurus hepatus (blue tang) would look with 36D's?
IMO, there are many forms of genetic science that is beneficial, such as prevention of birth defects, maybe cancer, other illnesses. But genetics and plastic surgery are different. Plastic surgery doesn't genetically change a being, unless you're Michael Jackson (look at Planet of The Apes and look at him. How much money could they have saved in makeup if they had just cloned him?). I am not saying I am against genetic research, but I don't know that we understand enough about it to start marketing genetically altered beings. However, I believe that chickens and cows are being altered to be better producers or just larger... I can't remember. Or maybe that's steroids... I need more coffee.

Hmmm,
I wonder which part of the chicken they are trying to genetically engineer to be larger???
So - ethically, plastic surgery is more akin to say, tattooing or ear piercing than to genetic engineering. I guess I can see that. The more drastic the procedure to change living organisms the more ethically offensive ???
It seems to me that many things have been "genetically engineered" to be more appealing to mankind. How many types of dogs have been bred to exaggerate certain traits? Horses, cattle, fish? If the changes are subtle and take many generations, we are fine with it. But if the results are immediate we are reluctant to accept it.
I realize it is unlikely that a danio and a jellyfish would ever procreate. But if danios had been unnaturally bred for years to exaggerate a red trait, it wouldn't even be news when such specimens were created. (except to the fish nerd community)
If you could tweak a gene that would make your offspring immune to disease, smarter, or even with straight teeth - would you do it?

Probably... does that make me unethical/unreligous/stupid?
oh btw, I'm all for genetically engineered larger breasts. huh... chickens. What were you thinking?

You know, CF is a great example of how ginetics will be altered for the better in the future. It's hereditary and a terrible, terrible affliction. Being able to remove it from your genes or take that protein (or whatever it is) out of your DNA, how wonderful! The problem that I see with it is that it WILL get out of hand. Pretty soon, parents will get a procreation menu and be able to pick and choose what the want. THAT, I think is a part of the unnatural consequence of altering Mother Nature's creation... or God's creation if you're religious I guess.
"How many types of dogs have been bred to exaggerate certain traits?"
I don't see how these compare truly. That would be targeted breeding and it's done with humans as well. Why do you think that J-Lo hooked up with a no talent loser like Ben Afflek? I mean, you take away his looks and his money and he's... me... OK, wait, that didn't work out right. Anyways, I understand your point and I am rambleing here because I don't want to look at another .cad right now. But, like any type of "tool" that science has invented, it could be useful or highly detremental. Like, cloning... Scary!

For a second there I had this image of Carl sitting on a yacht with J-Lo. At first it was funny, but now that I think about it, it is kind of creepy. If Carl were to get some money and looks would he be with J-Lo? Oh my I need to get away from these deep conversations and stick with things like microbacteria.

Carl - I don't think we've ever met - but I think anything to do with j-lo and a yacht is worth a moments pondering ...

Just an update on this. I heard about it on the radio this morning. Supposedly the Aquarium is the first store in Utah to carry these "Glow-Fish." They'll be in the first of next week. Then after the first of the year, everybody else will have them. I really wouldn't mind some things being genetically altered to glow... Like Mantis Shrimp, because then I could find the one in my tank that's "Knocking off" all my snails and crabs.

Good point Ryan! Maybe we could install a "Low Jack" type of tracking system on these things too, with a detonate controller. Then we don't have to tear our tanks apart to find unwanteds. Just a push of a button and the problem goes away. I could use on on my domino damsel!
