Topic: Elegance coral Posted: January 04 2007 at 6:24pm |
So I ordered an elegance coral online and it came in today. The water inside the bag was so cloudy you couldn't even see the coral, and it stunk really bad! So I didn't acclimate it, I just let the water temp get the same and then I decided to just stick him in the tank. Do you think that not acclimating him was a bad idea? I just thought he'd be relieved to get out of that nasty water! It did start opening up as soon as I put it in the tank so I'm guessing it's doing well.

Perhaps I would be better at basket weaving. . . at least it would be cheaper!

That has long been an argument. I think the jury is still out. Beautiful corals. I hope it does well for you.

There are a few people in this hobby that I have a ton of respect for and all they acclimate are their fish. When I saw them throw a piece of pom pom I gave them straight into their sump without acclimating it, I about died... We talked about it and came to the conclusion that they have never acclimated their corals and their tank was beautiful. So since then I don't acclimate my corals either. I just get the water to the same temp and then throw them in.

I can understand acclimating a coral, but I never have. I think it might be more valuable, however, if the coral was shipped and stressed. All the frags I've put in my tank, were from the LFS or other WMAS members.

Okay, good thats nice to know, it will save me alot of time in the future! Adam tells me this is a hard coral to keep, what do you guys think? IME I have more luck with the hard to keep corals than the ones that are supposed to be easy! It strongly resembles an anemone, and my clowns have been trying to fight off the coral beauty angel from nipping at it! I think if it survives they might host it, they just haven't quite figured out what they want to do! Is it true that this coral can sting you?

I have not tried to keep one of these beautiful corals. From what I have read in the past these have been difficult to keep long-term (a year or more) Some people speculated that our tank water is too clean. Then last year or so I have talked to quite a few people that have had real good luck with these. Enough people in fact that I suspect maybe better specimens are now available. Maybe better acclimation, collection, handling or aquacultured?

Mine looks like that except that mine doesn't have different colored tips. Well hopefully my fish will leave it alone and it will do well in my tank. Thanks guys.

I had an open cut, and when I tried to readjust my elegance it stung me in the sore. Now my finger is hugely inflamed and, as expected, the hospitals and all of the doctors I've contacted had no idea what I'm talking about. Please respond if you have any information about this. I've even contacted the Aquarium of the Pacific and they didn't know what to tell me! Help!

Welcome stung.....bad day huh.....I would just take some allergy medication, and wait it out......some of these things can be very painful, but I have not heard of a death due to elegance........also, might not be a bad idea to go down to the doctor for a shot, maybe pick up an epi pen just in case......I hope you are alright.....and able to post in the future.....
