So I got a small frag of xenia. Glued it to a piece of rubble and it seemed to be doing good. I've had it for about a week. Today I get home and it's shriveled up and dropping heads....ill check Para.tomorrow but anyone have any thoughts?

Without a list of parameters, as well as lighting and photoperiod information, flow, nutrient exportation and importation, it's difficult to say with any certainty. I'd check your parameters as soon as you can.

Water params are as follows as of this morning.

Ammonia .25....i added 2 clowns last night could this cause the slight increase?

Nitrite 0

Nitrate 10

Phosphate 0

Ph 8.2.

Everything else is doing fine. I am running a fluval skimmer which is pulling brown gunch daily. Also have a large clump of Chaeto in the back area which is growing well.

Stock return pump with a koralia 450 powerhead for additional water flow.

Do you test for alkalinity, calcium and magnesium? What lights are you using and what's the photoperiod?

I have not tested for any of those yet.

It's is the stock lights that came with the fluval evo 13.5 reef edition. They run from about 11am - 9 pm.

Check alkalinity, calcium and magnesium as soon as you can. Those parameters have a much greater effect of corals than ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. If you don't have a test kit at home, a lot of LFS will test your water for you.

How are the clowns doing? I thought any measurable amount of ammonia is a no for fish?

Everything is doing great. Xenia is recovering. Clowns are healthy only issue I am having is I have a frag of meteor shower that will not open. I've moved it to a very shaded are and nothing yet.

Ordered these for delivery for tomorrow.

I think the ammonia was just slight spoke from introducing them.

Xenia can handle some excess of pollution but an Ammonia level of .25 is a problem for all marine animals. Frankly, I would have advised against adding the new coral just yet, but since they are mushrooms, most of them will probably survive.

The tank appears to have been set up quite recently and by the look of it, I suspect the rock was dry dead LR. The high Ammonia is probably due to the rock and it won't go away on its own for a while. There are two items/products that can help remove Ammonia and other pollution the rock is producing and will produce for the next 6-12 months. The one I like best is called Poly-Filter, but unfortunately it's not available at LFS. The last time I ordered, I bought extra Poly-Filter just for this kind of situation, just to share with you and others in the same boat. Smile Contact me at 808-345-1049

Aloha,
Mark  Hug

P.S.
At the young age of this tank, I can guarantee that Alk, Ca and Mg are still within range. Those won't need to be tested for another month or two, but if I were you, I'd put the Red Sea Reef Foundation Pro test kit in the budget.

But the new corals will start consuming alkalinity and calcium once added. Even for a new tank, adding quadruple the amount of coral, the alkalinity and calcium should decrease rapidly and should be tested for a few times a week and supplemented through two part or water changes if it matches consumption adequately.

I also had a sock on my powerhead to protect the anemone in case it moved. It started causing the fine bubbles in the tank and greatly reduced my flow.

Crossing my fingers but the anemone hasn't moved and appears happy where he is so I removed the sock.

I'll post more pictures tomorrow.
