Been in utah for last 10ish years and picking this hobby back up, use to do a lot with African Cichlids as a kid including breeding Black Victorians.

Between me, wife, and kids we have a few tanks  54, 40, 20, 10, 5, 3.5, and a 1. All freshwater. 

Wife loves bettas, and while I like Cichlids I don't have any this time around.  I'm trying to employ some low tech planted tanks. Current crop of fish is nothing noteworthy.

I recently started building a system to auto change a tanks water.

Other hobbies include PC/LAN gaming, compete nationally with rapier swords, and kids . . .

PS, A few questions
  1. Where can I get  Black Diamond or Black Beauty for black substrate?
  2. Good places for plants?
  3. Good places for more uncommon fish?
  4. If anyone's looking to order from bobstropicalplants.com I would be interested in going together.

I don't know much on freshwater but I know The Aquarium and Benepets sell freshwater fish and have some unique ones.

when i had my freshwater planted tanks i purchased most if not all of my plants from other users on "plantedtank.net"

you could also try the community at www.reddit.com/r/plantedtank

I never did find any great places in utah to buy plants. I'm sure they exist, but i just found in could find more variety and cheaper prices online.

you should be able to get black diamond substrate at tractor supply.
