Topic: Algae on Birdsnest? Posted: October 30 2010 at 12:55pm |
I got a frag rack to put in my tank to frag a birdsnest. Soon after I did, I had brown algae all over the frags. I tried to clean them off, but it just came back. I do not have the algae anywhere else in the tank. Does this mean they are dead? I have it close to the top. I have a 65 Gallon, 2 150W phoenix halides. 2 Koralia 3's, and 1 Koralia nano blowing right over the frag rack. Then my return pump is 900 gallons an hour, so I think i have good flow?
Thanks for the help...

I always have that problem on my high frag racks. What I do whenever it gets bad is take the entire frag rack out and dip it in vinegar and leave it out of the water for a day, the rinse it and put it back in. It's super clean, it's easy and works great. If your Frags are covered then I would just do a coral dip and put them somewhere in the tank where the crabs and snails can get to them.

By the way, my tank doesn't ever get hair algae other than on the frag racks so I wouldn't worry that there is something wrong with your system.

What is your frag rack made of? Eggcrate leaches phosphates for a couple months after hitting the tank, so expect hair algae to grow on it until it runs out of phosphates.

Is it a hairy algae or a slimey algae?

What?! You pooped in the refrigerator, and ate the entire wheel of cheese?! I'm not even mad.... That's actually amazing!

It's always a good practice to dip all your new corals in a cleaning/disinfecting agent such as revive, coral rx, etc. before adding them to your tank. It will usually prevent you from getting pets like flatworms, red bugs, etc.
