Topic: Raising Rotifers Posted: July 25 2008 at 1:11pm |
OK, so I am trying to raise some rotifers that I got from PEGGYSUE, and her phone number is not in service. So I am going to ask here if I am doing this correctly. I have the rotifers in a two gallon plastic container with freshly mixed ro saltwater at 1.024. I have placed a small airstone in the container also, on light flow. No heater has been placed in the water. I have a lid on the container just to keep foreign matter out, it can still breathe. They are in a room with a window so they get some natural light. I have fed them Kent Marine "Phyto Feast" but I dont know how much and how often to feed. Another question I have: There is some brown loose gunk on the bottom of the container. I don't know what this gunk is, could it be poop, eggs, dead rotifers, or just a natural occurance. Should I feed finely crushed flake food. I have fed flake before, but I saw gunk on the bottom of the container and I did a complete water change because I thought the gunk was settling flake food, but that is not the case becaues the gunk appeared again without the introduction of flake food. I also am wondering if the gunk could be the Phyto settling.

Only feed the phyto. Just enough to tint the water green. It will turn clear. you will want to check it after five days and ask yourself.. are there too many rotifers in there... not enough food.. and adjust accordingly. also make a mark where the level is so you can keep it topped off.
DONT FEED THE FLAKE!!!!

I agree with Crystal,
and,
They need no light.
Did Amie tell you about feeding with algae paste?
If I were you, I'd be sure to go to the meeting and listen to Randy Reed in August. This is what they do for a living.
The stuff in the bottom is dead rotifers and fecal matter. It could get pretty thick without any real problem if you were feeding live phyto but I'd clean it up regularly by starting a new culture in another bottle and cleaning the first jug.
You can also grow live phyto in a 2 gal plastic jug.
Here is one of my rotifer cultures.

Well if you can't get ahold of Amie (PeggySue) then you can read her article about raising Rotifers in our club newsletter the SeaStar. February 2007 page 3.

Write down all your questions. Bring them to the August meeting. And, feel free to hang out with our speaker earlier in the day or after the meeting as well. We're always looking for people to help entertain the guests while they are here.

Thanks guy's,
No feeding flakes: OK.
Water should be tinted green: ok, I need to add more phyto
Did Amie tell me about paste: no, when I bought them it was just going to be introduced into the tank a little at a time do to the extra green water. Then I got a wild hair, and still had some of the little guys in the fridge and I thought I would give it a shot. I dont want to give the impression that Amie sold me something and left me hanging out to dry. She has been very helpful to me several times.
The stuff in the bottom is dead rotifers and fecal matter: that is good to know
SeaStar. February 2007 page 3. thanks Mike, I knew she wrote about this somewhere I just did not look hard enough.
I'd be sure to go to the meeting and listen to Randy Reed in August. yes I am going and I am very excited.
We're always looking for people to help entertain the guests while they are here. As far as I know Adam that is illegal in Utah . I'm not much of an entertainer, but I sure do talk alot!

I like growing things at 1.023. Then I can just scoop out a gallon of tank water and change it with a gallon of rotifer water.
Otherwise if you are slowly adding 1.014 (or around there) then you have to check your tank salinity.
Adam
ps- and I like growing things at the same salinity as their next tank)

Adam, you're breeding something? Yahoooo! I would love details!
I really need a start of rotifers for my new broodstock. Can I get a cup from you?

Thanks Adam, an amonia alert thingy before I go much further, I think I lost the culture only a couple swimming around. Are tigger pods much different to culture than rotifers?

Suzy- you need a cup of rotifers? No problem. I always have rotifers. Would love to tell you about what I'm trying to raise. Catch me after the next meeting at dinner.
DFO- I don't grow tigger pods. I use live daphnia for larger stuff. But I really can't see any differences in raising tiggers from rotifers. Although, again, I'd ask Randy.

Adam, when did you change your mind about growing live food! That is soooo cool! Last time we talked on this subject you were into using the Reed stuff. We really do need to get together and talk fish. I'm going to skip this meeting cause I've already seen it, but you should come to our next reefer party! We'll get Rob to make lasagna again.
We'll keep your breeding experiences just between you and I.
Jason, Tigger pods (Tigriopus californiicus) are much easier to grow than rotifers. Just throw them in a bucket, add a drop of nanno paste from BSD and they multiply like crazy! I must harvest a few hundred a day. Todd Gardner (he invented rotifers) says they are the most nutritious food on the planet!

I'm still a huge Reed foods fan. I don't think I'd ever grow phyto again. And the new fuzzy phytes.... well I'm excited to see how well they really do. But in general, you're right, I'd rather just buy foods then grow them. (especially now that I only have like 5% of the tanks I use to have)

Suzy,
BSD? After doing some research I think I have had tigger pods, they were little redish brown guys that jerked when them swam. I must have screwed up big time some where because I lost all of them . I tested the N03's last night and they were zero, I thought I might have over fed them. Salinity is 1.020. I fed Phyto-Plex not PhytoFeast . I will have to give this another shot after Thursday's meeting. I had fun trying though. This should have been as easy as a dot-to-dot that I did in kidergarten .

Adam, I am cruising up your way tomorrow. Could I get a start of rots? I have the prettiest broodstock I've ever had, and they are flirting! I know you 9-5 types have to work, but maybe you could leave a ziplock on your porch? Could I get a tiny start of the daphnia, too? I will trade you for a ziplock of fuzzyphytes!
Jason, BSD is Brine Shrimp Direct, one of our local resources! I am cruising there tomorrow so I'll let you know their new address. They are now closer! I do not think phytoplex is really microalgae. I checked it out under a microscope once.

Suzy-
shouldn't be a problem. I won't be around but Marzena should be. If not, I can have her leave it out. What time tomorrow? PM me in the morning.

Ok BSD that makes sense, I have been thinking about their hatchery dish. Let me know where they are located.
