I found at work an extra Advance standard REL-3P32-SC ballast.  I want to know if I can DIY some better lighting for my 55gal with this, or if it's nearly useless to me.  Can I run VHO's with this?  I know almost nothing about florescent lighting...

Looks like it is a ballast for 2-3 NO T-8's, Not worth much for lighting a tank.  I don't even know if anyone makes a T8 in actinic or any other suitable wavelength.

Here's the spec sheet:  http://www.advancetransformer.com/eCatalog/out/6559169201.pd f

Might be ok for a refugium or a really low light tank, but it's nameplate says it's just for T-8 bulbs.

But, if you already have the ballast, I would try using it to power a couple 36 watt PC bulbs.  That ballast is an electronic instant start ballast which is what the Fulham (workhorse) ballasts are and they are very versatile.  Maybe this one is too (but I don't really know).
