Since I can't seem to get anything to grow I have been on an equipment kick (since I can control more of that). I wanted to check my PH since that is 1 area I have never checked and since I am in the process of building a calcium reactor I decided that I should hook up my Arduino to a PH probe.
Here it is installed in the equipment cabinet next to the tank:
Here is the new UI that I made to support the pH probe with logic to automatically turn the outlet off if the PH drops below a designated range.
(not shown, the time spent troubleshooting why all my temps were reporting 0 degrees, I had a bad probe that has been in the tank the last year - once I pulled that out everthing started reading again - yay for information)
And then this weekend I finally finished my floating canopy so I put it in place.
Here is the regulator I finished up about a month ago all ready for my CaRx to get finished. I bought the regulator body off of ebay and then replaced the guages with Wika liquid filled guages and added a Burkert 6011a selonoid which are "plumped" with swagelock fittings all around I wired the burkert up to a 24dc power supply to turn it on off. Once I did the leak tests and everything passed now it sits all lonely on a Co2 tank in my garage dreaming of powering a CaRx one day (hopefully in the next month).

Thought this was a neat shot of my candy cane pistol shrimp and his feather duster counterpart. Sorry it is upside down. I will try to fix that once I am at a computer

Wow sorry to hear about all the fish! Looks like you are on your way to getting everything stocked again though so that's awesome. Good luck.

So it has been a while since I posted an update and I feel like I finally have things under control so I wanted to post an update.
Back in September shortly after I added my clownfish, my blue chromis died suddenly with no symptoms that I noticed. a week later my clownfish started acting sluggish and within a couple of days one of them died so I setup a QT tank, caught all of the fish (PITA) and then moved everyone to QT. I performed cupramine + prazipro treatments but slowly my fish all exhibited the same behavior of becoming sluggish, breathing heavy and eventually dying. Only my blue hippo tang made it. I let him hang out in QT for 75 days so that my tank could go fallow to try to kill off whatever parasite was in my DT. at day 74 I decided that I would stock my tank with many of the corals that I wanted so that I wouldn't have to risk re-introducing some parasite again so I bought a huge SPS pack from an online vendor and then let my tank go fallow for another 75 days. I just hit the 75 day mark again this week (Merry Christmas mr. blue tang) so he went back into DT. I stopped by Aquatic Dreams and they had a few fish that I have been wanting so I picked up a Yellow Corris Wrasse and a Yellow Rose Goby. They are currently hanging out in QT and I will start to treat them with the tank transfer method starting next week. I want to make sure that they are eating well and that I have time to do this correctly so I will be starting that probably on Monday. I am so excited to have fish in the DT again and to finally feel like I'm not spinning my wheels fixing problems - although I do have other problems, but they are small compared to the adventure this tank has been through to this point. I am hoping that the Yellow Corris Wrasse will help dwindle this flat worm problem I have that popped up once all of the fish were out of DT.
I dipped all of the corals in CoralRX while they were in this bucket and a few nasty large flatworms came out of the torch corals.
The last item that I have been battling is bad water quality. I bought a BRS 6 stage RO/DI unit with pressure guage and triple TDS monitor because I wanted to make sure that I was putting high quality water into my tank. I hooked it up at the beginning of October and found that the TDS coming out of the membrane was 45. (Tap is 189). I was burning through a canister of DI resin a month. So after a bunch of research and talking with people about RO units on other forums we concluded that my membrane was faulty. I upgraded to a Spectrapure 90GPD membrane and put a capillary tube flow restrictor in place to accomodate the new membrane. My TDS is now coming out of the membrane at 2 and will drop to 1 after large water productions. I am really hoping that this helps solve my problem of a mucus on my water surface. I can go further into depth on the formulas that were used to determine that my membrane was bad if anyone is interested.
Thanks for following and reading!

I wanted to post a quick update. I just got some new lighting because I wanted something a little brighter than the LED fixture that I have. 24" 8 bulb ATI dimmable sunpower.
Fedex delivered this to me on my birthday.
I also stopped by A reef Oasis and picked up some davinci clowns, a frogspawn and an anemone. I will post some pictures once I get these new lights hung.

Finally finished my electronic cabinet!! This was way more work than anticipated. For those that are curious all the wires in the top left are from the arduino and the bread board. It controls the outlets individually from my web interface.

I have the locline return agitating the water which is the only place where the build up isn't happening. Since most of my stuff was new for this build I think it could just be oil-ish type residues that have been building up and since I wasn't using a filter sock until last night, they were just accumulating on the surface in the DT. I am still suspicious of the width of the slots in the overflow. if I continue to get this problem I think I may connect a couple of them to allow for a greater flow rate and less surface resistance. But that is last effort type move that I am not willing to do yet. I will keep you posted if the filter sock clears this up (I think it should)

Looking nice. I am unsure of what the problem is, but if flooding it as you say worked, could you just point the Gyre up a tiny bit to break the surface of the water slightly? I have one and I have it slightly pointed up so it creates a small bubble on the surface.

The electronics cabinet has had a small amount of progress. I am 90% done with it and should finish it this weekend.
I have however been fighting a bigger problem. I keep getting a build up of scum on the surface of either the display or the sump. I decided to try my hand at the DIY Filter Sock using the polyester felt and we will see how well it does. This was one of the items that I was originally concerned about and why I upgraded my return pump. This is a shot from in the tank looking up. You can see the "milky" look of the surface. I have found that the overflow design is actually the culprit of this. The slits are too thin so it creates surface tension and items on the surface don't go through, but the underlying water column does... at least this is how it appears. I tested my theory by "flooding" my tank. I put an attachment on the overflow that eliminated the overflow box and all of the surface film was gone in about 30 minutes. I made sure to catch it all in a filter sock this time, because up to this point it all ends up back in the display.
I am still waiting on my other light... and I was impatient so I ordered all of the parts to build another pendant.

Got my 15gal water jug hooked up to the RO line with float valve so that I have 15gallons of RO/DI on hand at all times. I have left an unattended RO line on too many times so I knew this was a necessity for me.
10 heads of Eagle Eye Zoas and a birdsnest thanks to PharmaSki Here is my Pom Pom Xenia - It has recovered nicely after making friends with a pump a couple weeks ago.
I will have to bust out a better camera than my iPhone's once these start looking better ;).
I also forgot to mention that my magnafuge showed up. You can see the magnet in the tank with the shot of the return pump (Eheim 1262).

I did upgrade the return pump. I found a pump locally that I know is overkill for this, but the tubing is restricting it down and making it do a pretty good job. I am definitely seeing more items go into the overflow than I previously was.
As a quick update. I added a BRS media reactor this week. These things are pretty awesome.
I am just about done with the electronics cabinet that will go next to the tank. I decided that I wanted 8 controllable outlets so I ordered another relay ($7) and once I have that wired up I will be putting everything together and will take a picture of the finished product and put it on here. I added a few blue chromis 2 weeks ago when all of my parameters hit 0 and then this weekend I added a Flame angel and a few corals. I am going to test my levels again in a week and see what they look like. So far everything is looking good.
Side Note: These bubble magnus skimmers are amazing! Even when there weren't fish in the tank it was pulling out some pretty nasty skimmate.

Hi,
Its hard to tell from your images, but did you upgrade/use a new return pump? I want to upgrade, and know that the plumbing is kind of funky with Cadlights.
Thanks!

I wanted to post a quick update on my tank, it is going well I'm still waiting on the other light so I have put a little T5 light for now. I added a small frag of pom-pom Xenia and a mushroom, both of those have done amazing. All of my levels seemed to be in check. The crabs and corals have been doing great and the copepod population is all over the glass so I added a couple a blue chromosome today. If they look good in a week and my params test out I will add some more coral.

to clean up the hanging kit i would suggest using an eye bolt and some cables with carabiners on them. Thats what I used. It allows a pretty clean look. You can check out my build, i think i have a picture of my light hanging fixture. its pretty similar to yours.
