Topic: Dying anemone? Posted: September 24 2014 at 8:57am |
I just added an anemone to my tank last night and when I woke up this morning it had a brown thing hanging from it which looked like it had swallowed a turbo snail. I turned on the lights and it had fallen off. Is my anemone dying? I don't want it to poison my whole tank. Thank you for your help. 801 755 0843

Looks like a GBTA Green bubble trip Anemone with are really hardy and a good first anemone , to me it looks normal if it was dying it would start to meld and would not be holding onto the rock ,i am going to make a guess you have had the nem for at least a week , it takes them about a 2 weeks to a month to settle in and i am sure as soon as it does it will look beautiful , the foot looks to be puffy witch means its on the move looking for a better place that suits it , i hope this help you , also if it looks like its melting smell the tank water if it smells bad then that a good sign when a nem is dead the smell with make you want to throw up ITS BAD . well good luck and keep up posed

I agree just looks like the Nems on the move or maybe even pooping... I have 2 in my tank and my large one shrinks up like this then had long strings of brown nastiness that it excretes.
Keep an eye on it, and do not force feed it while its in this state as it will stress it out more.

Agreed. Most likely just excreting waste, and shrivieled up due to the move.
As long as it is holding fast to the rock (it is) and it is NOT 'melting' / disintegrating (it isn't) you should be fine.
It may move around the tank a bit until it finds a spot it likes, this is also normal.

Hello Brett and Welcome, I agree the anemone may be acting normal, but then again it may not. I would suggest something, if you are willing. Your post mentions parameters of Nitrite and Nitrate being normal. What may seem normal, may still be a concern when considering the larger picture of other important parameters, such as what I like to call the Big Four: Salinity, Temperature, Alkalinity and Calcium. Just to be sure your tank is not headed for trouble, would you like to share the actual numbers for the Big Four, as well as Nitrite & Nitrate? Also how long has the tank been set up and what is its filtration?
Aloha, Mark

Sorry to hear that. Did you get a net and try to scoop up the slimy mess? Removing it helps get rid of some major pollution. That's important at this point in the life of your young tank. I would suggest using a bag of AC(activated carbon) to clean the anemones dissolved toxins out of the water
We are here to help. The info and pic requested above will be very welcome.

I took my water over to the aquarium and it looks likr my salinity was a little high .026 bit they said everything else was good minus my new, amonia rise I with I would have had them give me exact numbers. My temperature is right at 80 and nitrates at 20. I was able to get it out amd I just did a water change with 5 gallons of pure ro to bring down the salinity. I am going to check it again tomorrow so I dont do any, more damage. I also put on new filter socks. Please let,me know if there is anything else to check on. I only have one coral in there that I want to be healthy before I add anything else. Thank you for the help.

Okay that's sounding normal.
May we see a pic of the tank?
Did you ask them to check Alkalinity and Calcium? Actually, it sounds like this is a new tank so there's no need. Alk and Ca will be fine because there are very few organisms eating it. Anemones don't do well in new tanks, sorry.
Salinity at 1.026. As a matter of fact, 1.023 - 1.026 is the proper range, so there was no need to bother adjusting the salinity. Sorry, but some LFS employees are uninformed and will lead you astray. If 5 gallons of fresh water was exchanged for 5 gal of salt water, the salinity may now be too low. It's not an emergency but will need to be raised slowly over the next few days by taking out some water, mixing salt into it and pouring it slowly back into the tank.
80 degrees is at the limit of where I like to keep my water. If you have a heater, unplug it. It's not needed until winter. When it is plugged back in, adjust it to keep the water at 75 degrees. That way when the temperature rises during the day, it will stay in the best range, 75-78. Anywhere between 70-80 is okay.
I'm not too far from The Aquarium. Why not skip by that LFS and come visit me. Come see my coral and fish farm. My phone and address are below. I'll give you some free stuff. I have a free Hydrometer for you.

The way I do it is I email phone pics to myself, then open email from my laptop, re-size and then upload them here. When you visit I'll be interested to see the pics from your phone.
