 Topic: Sore on Blue Spot

I came back into town yesterday noticed a weird sore or something on the lip of my blue spotted jaw fish.
It almost looks like dry skin from chapped lips but I've not seen it before.
Do I worry? Wait? Quarantine? ...

I've seen this once before, but unfortunately the jawfish didn't survive (I believe because of the lack of treatment). For some reason I remember hearing that this is caused by a fungal infection, but it could be bacterial. I would quarantine and treat with an antibiotic or antifungal medication.

Looks like lymphocystis. It's a virus that usually clears on its own with good water quality. Marine fungal infections are incredibly rare.
Any other fish having issues?

We've had this fish for about 2+ months. She's eating fine and seems lively enough. I'd hate to treat in the wrong direction.

No. All other fish seem free of issues and as I mentioned above, the fish is eating well. She even eats the reef flakes I toss in for variety sometimes.
I'll run the gamut of water tests tonight but everything is generally real stable.
Any recommended steps?

I agree, fungus can go away on it's own. I have seen Cleaner Shrimp clean fungal growths off of fish. Not sure whether a Jawfish would allow a cleaning. Maybe if the CS was a half-pint it would be less intimidating to the Jawfish.

If all of your parameters are in line, then I would just leave everything be. It's a virus, and it will run its course in 3-6 weeks. As gross as it sounds, think of it like a cold sore (also caused by a virus.) It'll always be there in the background, but it tends to pop up during periods of stress or injury to the area. Watch your tank to see if there's any aggression going on. Most likely, the jawfish just injured himself while building his burrow, and the infection set it. There's a very slight possibility it's epitheliocystis...which is like fish chlamydia (not kidding), but it's a gram-negative bacteria. You'd have to treat that with Furan-2 and/or Kanaplex for about 2 weeks outside the tank. I doubt you'd be able to catch him.

Nick is right...it could also be a mucous plug...which should go away on its own too.
Just make sure he keeps eating. With it being on his jaw, it could cause issues whereas it might not normally if it was located elsewhere.
