On my reef!

My 75 AGA has a bar that goes right across the middle, casting a
shadow that is so messing up my new design!. Talking to one of our
more knowledgable reefers, he suggested I just cut it out. Replace it
with a piece of acrylic, using nylon screws. Thus far, it's been easy! I
drilled 2 holes on either side, cut a piece of acrylic to size and then
the drilled holes. Fits perfectly!! I tightened the bolts down pretty
securely, but not too tight. I know those things love to snap!

BUT, now I have to cut out the original piece! I'm too afraid! Has
anyone else done this?

I just cut the center brace out of my tank with just a good sharp exacto knife.

A good ole' hacksaw is quick but you will need to catch the shavings. If the tank is full, You might need to hold the sides together with a long clamp or two, snug but not tight. Place one on either side before you cut the brace out so that the sides don't spread apart before you can get the nylon bolts in. Also, don't cut the brace too close to the drilled holes. I'd leave at least 1/2 inch between the holes and the cut, to give the holes some strength.

I've already got the piece of acrylic in, so I just need to cut off the
bar, but I was feeling too nervous! If you guys have done and your
tank didn't crash all over the floor, I'll try it!

Thanks!

I would use the clamps like Mark suggested.  That way the pressure can slowly be released onto your new bracket.
