<Edit> Topic changed because the heat situation in this office requires it. I now need to find a 36"x2" LED strip that makes colors pop.<Edit>

Looking at what I need to make a 3x39W t5ho light for a wall aquarium.

- I would like the reflector to be about 39"x3" Do they make reflectors like that?

- I'm curious, why the end caps are so large? I don't have room for those. Is there another way?

I determined that one WH 3 and one WH 5 will power the tubes. I'm looking at one plant glow and two actinic tubes on two different timers.

Your thoughts?

I would look into end caps and reflectors from Reefgeek, most T5 end caps are pretty small, and they sell high quality 99% reflective aluminum for good prices.  For bulbs I would do two ATI Pure Actinic, and one ATI Daylight plus, it's a great combo that makes colors pop while showing good growth rates.

Cool LED's are the future lighting of this hobby if it can compete with the T5HO market.

I'm hoping to hear from those who have been researching LED's

i have no personal experience but have read good things about reefbrites.   they are kinda pricey (200 or so) but they have a 36 in bar.   they claim same light output as a t5 bulb.  might be worth checking out

Once again, where I got shutdown on your other post, I am telling you- you need to check out the Reefbrite strips....

Please check out these links....I admit some LED setups don't pop....with Reefbrites, I beg to differ-
The Reefbrite actinic LEDs are a whole lot more purple in color than you would expect from the more typical chilly-blue LED colors out there. Plus they have a Sunblaze reflector!

This last link is a thread at RC...I would take some time and browse through the many posts...there are pics, mounting procedures, PAR READINGS, colors, growth estimates, testimonials, etc....I thinkWink

Hoping Santa may bring me a 48inch strip to add to my 6 bulb fixture....

The situation changed. I have to find something that won't heat the tank. Popping colors cannot be the priority anymore. Unhappy
Thanks for the links. I'll check it out to see how good it can get.

Mark,

I just got the Grassy LeDio LED 21 watt pendant today. Got it installed on my nano and it's awesome. It's to replace my Corllife PC 18 W. It's awesome. You should check it out when you're in the area.

I see they come in 3 types of blue, a "pearly" white and a purple. Does it make colors pop?

I got aqua blue. 3 white and 4 blue. Personally I think it's a little more white than blue, but it does make the color pops. On a scale of 1-10. I would say 7.

Mark--you could always build a small array of 3w crees with optics that would be no wider than the tank.  I'll even volunteer to help you with it if you'd like (though I am in payson).
Was that in there yesterday? Casper--WY windier than ?

Down to a 20, soon to double or nothing

I honestly loved my Cree's.

Cool White and Royal Blue are ones that you want to look for, if you go a 50/50 combination, it has a 14k mh look to it with a hint of purple.

Also you can now buy Green and Red LED's that will bring out more color from your coral. I'm excited to get my t5 fixture torn apart so I can do a retro with it this fall.

Here is a great link all about LED's. This is one thread that furthers my belief that LED's are not where they need to be just yet. I wouldn't go adding red or green LED's to help with colors. On the last page you will find some guy that tried that and it was an epic failure.

http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1885076

Hope that helps!

Oh, I agree 100% that they are not where they should be yet, but I still would buy them over and over again due to the color that I got from them. There's nothing else like it. Plus people have had success growing everything with them, even clams.

I know that there is the whole issue of LED's not having the UV spectrum, but as a stepping stone they are amazing. I think by the time we get to where people say LED's should be, plasma will have taken over.

For now its all just based on personal opinion. I love the growth and everything I am getting out of my T5's at the moment, but I would trade for LED's any time of day

There is no need for the UV spectrum actually. That was a myth that went around for a while.

MH lights use a UV filtering glass so no UV is getting through anyways. T5's put out very little UV so UV is not needed as much as people thought.

What is missing is the spectrum. Grim Reefer has completely moved onto LED and has been running Warm Whites mixed with blue, royal blue and cool whites. He hopes it will add the red that has been missing with LED's.

Sorry Mark that was all off topic. Continue on.
