Topic: Can Aptasia go Air borne? Posted: December 10 2008 at 11:23pm |
The reason I ask is I have Aptasia in my 55 gallon agro tank now ... there was NO cross contamination between any other tank ... we got the 65 gallon that has a aptasia problem .. a few months after that I got aptasia in the 140 ... and now I have it in the 55 agro ... I would suspect since I used live rock from a LFS in the 140 it could have been in there .. (but after 3 years its just now showing???) however in the 55 gallon was LBTR that was dug up, power washed and placed in the tank .. new sand .. no seeding from any other tanks ...
how else would it have gotten in there??

No, Aiptasia is not airborne.
If you use anything in common between the two tanks it can contaminate them. Nets, hydrometers, hands, etc.

I agree. Not airborne but spread like wildfire. Even under water.

I don't know .. I guess it could be gotten in there from my arm .. or something .. I am never in the tank though .. thats the strange part .. I have separate feeding cups for each tank, never cross the water .. never use 1 cup to feed another tank .. I just don't know how it could have gotten in there ....
I did not think they could go air born ... I know that was way out there .. but I have no other explanation .....

When I set up my 120 I bought Walt Smith live rock and had it flown in from Fiji. I had one tiny aiptasia show up after almost 4 years. I never saw any before then. I have no idea where it came from.

That is strange Mike .. but on LBTR? .. freshly dug up Power washed??? .. thats what I don't get ... could it be possible that it survived the 1000 years of being in the desert??? .. I doubt it .. lol .. its just too strange ... Could it have come from the new sand I put in there? ... again I doubt it .. but what the he!! ...
I does not really bug me that much that its in the agro tank .. I think it will be easy enough to keep in check .. just wondering how it got in there to begin with ...

If you've ever added coral to the tank, you've introduced the possibility of aptasia.

I agree with Jon.
We really need to be dilligent when trading/buying/selling corals so we don't introduce anything unwanted into our tanks or into other tanks. I think we have much better control over this than the LFS do but I don't think very many hobbiests inspect incoming or outgoing frags very well if at all let alone quarantee them.

Jon already said what I was going to say. If you have adding anything from a pet store or from anybody else's tank you have a chance of getting something you don't want (Aiptasia).

I completely agree with this statement. I never had a majno problem until I received a mushroom rock from a fellow member a few years ago and since then I have been fighting them ever since.
