Topic: How Big is Too BIG? Posted: April 26 2005 at 9:41pm |
Like many people I saw an animal that was very beautiful and decides to buy it without knowing anything about it. The animal just happened to be a pure white sebae anemone. It was about 3" across when I put it in my tank 4 months ago. I did not read about this animal until I had it in my tank. I found out later that sebae anemones are deprived of light to turn them the bright white that they are in the pet stores. Because they are deprived of light they are near death and most do not recover. Mine did a full recovery however. The problem with that is now I have this fast growing mammoth of a anemone that is taking over my tank. Now it is around 9" inches from end to end and a very nice greenish brown color. All this growth was within 4 months. I have read that these anemones can grow up to 18+" in an aquarium. I only have a 55 gallon tank so this anemone is already taking up allot of space. How big should I let this sebae get before I sell of trade it?
Here is a picture of it.

Hello everyone,

I guess that's on you. Pull it out whenever you like.
Personally I would just keep it. As long as the anemone is happy and healthy (which it obviously is), it's an awesome centerpiece. If it gets to the point where the anemone can't get enough light, you'll need to do something.
Just my opinion,
Chris

That is amazing! What kind of lights do you have? Do you feed it?

I do like the anemone and want to keep it. Especially since I have read they are hard to keep and usually die quickly in an aquarium. But at its current rate of growth it will be over a foot in about a month. Today I noticed it touching my green star polyps which are on the rock above the anemone. I don't think it stung the star polyps but it still touched them. In one month it will be able to touch the whole star polyp rock.
Could I stop feeding it and only give it light would that help slow its growth?

I have 2 X 150 watt 14K Hamilton MH, and 2 X 110 watt VHOs one day light and one super actinic. I have been feeding it a few krill once a week or when I remember to.
I had a 130 watt pc light for the first month and a half.
I used the flash when taking the photo so it turned out a little darker then it really is. I will add a photo to my gallery tonight without the flash.

Why not frag it? Cut it directly in half. Wasn't it Tony Calfo that wondered why we aren't doing this more?

Anthony said that so far they have only had good success with bubble tip anemones.

Wasn't it Tony Calfo that...
That's the first time I've ever heard anyone call him Tony. But I'm with Mark, frag it (sorry Jake).

I know what you mean. I have a sebae that is absolutely huge hosting my GSM pair. But I think that I would just move other stuff around in my tank to accomodate the sebae they are so beautiful. Mine has grown like a weed in my tank. It is under 440 VHO and 260 PC. But everything in the tank grows like mad. Might be time to start fragging.

Same deal with mine... Looks just like the one in the picture... bought it
farely small now it's really huge pretty purple with a bright purple tip.
When mine expands it's 10" atleast end to end. and it's allr eady
decimated a starpolyp rock. I think I've got it pretty well corralled so it
can't damage anything else. But I've been thinking it might be time to do
something about it.
Kind of funny though considering they're not supposed to fare well in the
marine aquarium, but 3 on this thread alone have them, and all doing
very well... hm...

I have one also and I love it. He has beautiful colors when extended. He is the center piece in my nano. My clowns are hosting and he eats a healthy meal every other night. I moved most of my corals out to the bigger tank. I did leave some xenia out of reach on the upper rocks. He is doing exceptionaly well under PC's.

I don't even feed mine. It gets what ever the clowns feed it once in a while of what ever it gets out of the water stream.
