I've a 14k hqi 250w ushio, nice white light, not blueish or yellowish, just a crisp white color.  I love it.
Was that in there yesterday? Casper--WY windier than ?

Down to a 20, soon to double or nothing

Having both 10k and 14k. As of now I prefer the 14k . My coral color in my 225 with the 10k is nowhere as nice as the color I have in my 65g. But, with the tank being new, there might also be other reasons why my color in my coral is faded.  It's a mystery to me.
Can you say "coral color, coral color, coral color"Smile

10k all the way...

Although for pure aesthetics, I would go 14k

On one side of my tank I have 10k with actintic vho.  On the other side I have 15k with 10k vho.  They look pretty close but I just purchased new 15k halides and 10k vhos.  I like the look of the 10k vhos by themselves better than just the actintics when the halides turn off. I also like the fact that there is much less algae growth on the glass.

I am in the process of planning my lights for my 75gal (thank Jake for posting this).

My question for the folks w/ MH and VHO combos - how many VHOs do you have??

I like to have 2 linear feet of VHO per linear foot of tank.  In other words on a 55 gallon reef I would like to have two 4' VHOs.

But the more the better.  If you can add more then why not.

Shane,

I have the "best" lighting combination. 100% URI VHO on the display tank.  However, I do have a 20K MH over the sump...Wink

Is there really a big difference in the amount of algae growth from the K rating of the lights? if so is there also a huge difference in the growth of the coral?

I saw dkle's tank and changed from three 20k to three 14k phoenix MH hqi's and four 5 ft T5 actinics. for the sump, I went this route:

I bought two of the 5100 k's.
Sold it all. Building a 285 with dedicated fishroom.

I changed from the 2nd best (10K MH with Actinic VHOs) the the best setup (14k phoenix).  Not only are the 14Ks much less expensive (few bulbs to run and less electricity), but I really think my tank looks better.  Coral growth has slowed but it's worth it in my opinion.
