I have been running my bio denitrate reactor for about a year now. I was wondering if there is ever a need to clean it out? It has a small amount of algae growing inside but nothing to worry about.

Do you I just let it do it's thing for years to come and as long as there are not issues?

It's best not to disturb it. That being said at some point the media will not be enough to support your current flow rate. At that point you need to open it and add more sulfur media. Don't remove what's in there and try to make the addition as quickly as possible so that you don't kill off all the bacteria by exposing it to oxygen. You don't want to have to start the cycle over again.

So in short, If you are unable to maintain Nitrate levels and adjusting the drip rate has no effect, then add more sulfur media in as quick way as possible and then get it back online.

Other than that there is nothing to really worry about.

Other option is that you could start up a second reactor and get it cycled and then shut down the original and dump all of the old media so that it's ready for the next time.

If it's doing it's job then let it work.
