My friend's tank:
Eric built the tank and it turned out great. PVC bottom, etc. The tank has a dedicated sump room, remote to the tank.

Wow, that's beautiful. I imagine the rest of the home will be just as amazing.

Now that's the way to do it, put the tank in and then build the rest of the house around it! Very nice.

I'm sorry, but I see a maintenance nightmare and several design flaws.

Please elaborate? I have thought this design looks cool as it provides lots of viewing area in the home. Are you referring to the limited space to reach into the tank?

Limited space to reach in to the tank is only the beginning. I'd rather not say more in public. At Corey's request, I wrote a lengthy PM with my itemized list.
Aloha, Mark

It would be interesting to see if the problem you see have already been thought of and resolved. I would assume that a tank build this large with its own fish room would have been carefully plan by someone with many years of reefing experience. The saying, "You can't judge a book by it's cover," could come into play with this build.

It's all moot if he has a company service it, then it's their problem. Still a very beautiful tank and can't wait to see more!
Corey will you have more updates on this as the build continues?

We're finally setting the tank up:
I convinced my friend to modify the upper canopy. I convinced him that it wasn't a good long-term thing, and access would be awful.

So equipment so far:
270 gallon tank 75 gallon custom sump (under construction) Reeflo Snapper return pump (3) AI Sol lighting fixtures, used (2) Jebao powerheads
We decided not to use the room originally intended for the sump. The piping underslab is not adequate and would only cause issues. We can't rip up concrete floors and there really isn't a good way to get over to the room originally set up as a sump room.
Instead, we decided to place the sump underneath the tank and use the original sump room as a water change and staging room. There's enough room to fit a couple large garbage cans in there for water changes and the RO unit can be mounted on the wall.

The floor plan of the house in the area of the tank looks like this:
Note the tank location, and the equipment room on the left of the picture. There are two, 2" diameter conduits between the equipment room and the tank that are run under the concrete slab.
The tank is really the focal point of the whole upstairs. It should be stunning if we can get it set up right.

Eric and I have been thinking about the sump design. So far, it's going to be 40" x 20" x 20" and should be sufficient to contain 3" of water from the top of the main tank. We'll have to put some siphon breaks in the plumbing to prevent siphons. I'm not a fan of backflow preventer/check valves and would rather see a sump that is capable of containing water returning to the sump when the main pump is turned off.
I broke out my old Excel spreadsheet that calculates pump flow with head losses and started getting nerdy with it. I had to hack it to get newer pump curves in it; it should kick the "Reef Central" head loss/pump calculator's butt down the block! I started geeking out with it and had to stop.

Yep. It should be filled in the next two to three weeks though.

We started hooking up a supply line to the RO unit:
|
Posted By: Corey Price
Date Posted: September 02 2017 at 3:21pm
We then mounted the RO unit on the wall:
We ran a 3/8" LDPE line under the concrete slab to the tank for top off, and one 3/8" line for water changes:
We then started to drill the tank for 1-1/2" bulkheads. The great thing about the tank is that it has a PVC bottom, which makes drilling an easier prospect!

Ha! I just noticed that the picture was upside down. I fixed it...
So water won't be in the tank for another two weeks. The sump is finally done and we can start plumbing the tank.
The PVC bottom is doubled around the edges and at the overflow. It isn't nearly an inch thick everywhere. It took a while to drill, but no worries of chipped or cracked glass.

Looks to me like a custom sump with only one small chamber on the end, probably to help stop bubbles at the drain where, my guess is, a filter bag is not used. I'm a wanna be Engineer, but Corey is a real Engineer. I'll just bet that he had maximum efficiency and simplicity in mind for its design. Am I right? Kinda like this design of mine, found listed in the Reefkeeping Tips: Secrets of an easy Refugium http://www.utahreefs.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=36396" rel="nofollow - http://www.utahreefs.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=36396

I can't believe you let there be a filter sock holder on there...
|

Eddie,
Yes, it's a two-chamber. Simple. I plan to set up an algae reactor and keep the light out of the sump (and keep algae from growing in there). Eric built in the filter sock holder but I'm not going to tell my friend to use it. It didn't cost extra.
Mark,
I like the KISS principle. Just a bubble trap, an area for a skimmer, algae reactor, heater, and that's it.

Starting to glue up parts. Cardboard keeps the glue off the floor.
The sump, under the tank.
You know you're going big when the ball valve is as big as the return pump! I like the Reeflo Gold series with good Baldor motors. We're going for just under 5x water flow thru the main tank, so a Snapper return pump is a great, low maintenance, reliable pump that can be fully serviced.
Stay tuned next week for some pictures of plumbing gymnastics due to a few things in the way!

The RO setup, ready to go.
Plumbing complete. It wasn't as bad as I thought.
View of plumbing, including main and emergency drains as well as pump return.
First little trickle of water!!!
It's going to take a few days to fill. This was progress overnight.

It's finally full of RO water. We will start to fill the sump, run the system, and test for leaks prior to putting in salt.

Things are progressing very nicely. I think the recent changes being made made everything look better and should run better as well. Nice work!

We started last night by dry stacking the dry rock. I stacked it several times before I found what I liked.
We put the rock in the tank. I was going for two stacks of rock, with fish hiding places, and a channel diagonally thru the rock. With a 3' wide tank, aquascaping is fun!
We then turned on the main pump. We had a leak at the pump inlet threads, so we fixed that with a little more teflon and moved on with sand and salt. Knowing that sand and salt would turn the water so murky, we did this last.
