Quick question about fans. I've been running my tank without one and it
seemed to be OK until this last week. I've been in Japan for 10 days and when I got back, I noticed the temp has jumped up. The high temperatures over the past few weeks outside are effecting my tank it appears even though it's in the basement. Any suggestions on fans? Will any old clip on fan work? Should I invest in a computer-like fan and build it into my hood? Do I point it straight down in the water if it's just a temporary solution? Should I put it in the sump or at the top near my lights? BTW, I have MH with an open top and open back hood. That's why I haven't had a problem with heat until now. Maybe this is just a temporary problem but I need to get my temp down quick because I ordered a bunch of SPS's. I have two computer fans in my open back and top canopy and in the last couple of weeks my temp rose also, so I just put a clip on fan on the top of the canopy and pointed it down into the water and it brought the temp right down to where it should be 78. I believe you would get the same results by putting it down by the sump also. i would just buy a clip on if you think its a temporary problem.
walmart has some $8 clip on fans with 2 speeds that are pretty big (and
white) and i've got one going on my sump. lowered the temp from
84 to 79 where the heater now is even kicking in. a good
investment in my book! -dwn |

I would go with a fan in the hood, mabey between the lights and water(if possible) seems more eficient to prevent the initial heating of the water than cooling it after its been heated. I'm really interested in Japan so if you don't mind could you PM me about your trip

A fan is certainly efficient at moving hot air away from the lights, but it's greatest value is in the cooling effect of evaporating water. The fan is most efficient when pointed slightly down across the surface of the water.
